"Re-forward your Firewall Ports"Follow

#1 Jul 22 2009 at 3:02 PM Rating: Good
Ok, I have not been able to connect to WoW for about a week. I login and get the realm menu asking me to select a realm. I select any realm, press ok, and the "connecting to game server" message shows up for about half a second. Then I am sent back to the realm menu. I cannot get past this part.

I went to the official WoW technical support boards. There were several threads about this, but I didn't see any solutions offered by players or GM's. Then, I found this:

Quote:
Re-forward your Firewall Ports.

To do this, access your firewall port screen for your gaming. Then uncheck the "enable" box and click "save settings", then "continue" back to the port screen. Then "Enable" the ports again, and click "save settings". This will re-register your ports again in a sense.

Then just restart your computer to make sure everything is fresh and organized and then try WoW again.

I have two questions:

1. How do I access the firewall port screen for my gaming? My computer runs on Windows Vista.

2. Do you think that this is the right solution? Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can fix this?

If you have a router I would first open those specific ports on the router. You can find information on how to access the router menu through your browser in either the original manual or the manufacturer's website.

You will need to first identify the ports in the router's menu and then set up access rules for them. You can either have them open at all times or set the router up to only open them at specific times which is handy if you have a strict playing time.

Can you tell us which router brand you have?

Ok my bad, should have asked for the model number too. Anyway this site will help you set up your router for port forwarding specific programs. Just pick your router model from the LinkSys list at the bottom and select your program. Then follow the directions and it should fix your problem. Don't bother buying the program they offer, it's a waste of money.

Also, do you have a program like Window's Firewall or Norton Firewall running as well? Despite the title of the site it only covers a few software firewalls so if you do have one we'll need to adjust it too.

Unfortunately I tried that site. When I tried putting my IP in the address bar, it asked for a user name and password that I never made. "Admin" didn't work.

My router is a WRT54GS.

Did you use the factory reset button? It's a pin hole like the ones you see on CD/DVD-ROM drives. That will reset the username/password to the default one and you'll be able to get into the menu.

Story time:

I hit the reset button and all internet connection was lost. It took us a day and my stepfather's IT friend to find out that we no longer had an IP address. So my stepfather called Comcast, we got the connection working again, and now World of Warcraft works as well. I just had to reinstall all my addons for some reason.

In short, I can play WoW, my brother srsly haets me, and I am banned from the router. Smiley: lol

EDIT: Argh, WoW's doing it AGAIN. WTF?

try getting a belkin router or a new router, I have never experienced the problem you seem to be having atm. it sounds almost like it's memory is getting reset over and over.

also though less likely you could have a failing ethernet port on the router causing an internal conflict of some sort. I did experience that problem on an older belkin router.
fortunately rhey have a lifetime warranty and it was replaced in 3 days for the shipping cost. I want to ay it was under 10$. good luck, and if you find a resolution let us know

Here's what I was able to do this morning:

There were some folders called "Interface.lotsofnumbers" and "WTF.lotsofnumbers". I deleted them, uninstalled all the addons, and ran WoWRepair. Then I reinstalled the addons and was able to login to the game server. I'm not sure what was going on, but it seems to be fixed for now.

Thanks to the people that tried to help. Smiley: smile
