Ok, question...
Had a power outage a couple of days ago and my computer was on. After the power came back up, i go to boot up the computer and it asks me it i want to go safe, normal, or last known good config. I go with safe just in case and it restarts and goes back to the 3 selections. it keeps cycling through and never gets to the main log in screen.
Any Ideas?

Sounds like you may have corrupted your Hard drive. Most likely you'll need to reformat the HD and reinstall windows and all your software.

God I hope not. Looks like im going to try and pull the HD out and see if I can get the data off of it...
Download a Knoppix ISO file, and boot the computer with the CD in the drive. You should be able to pull your data out to an external source.

meh i was going to pull the HD, connect it as a slave to another workstation and pull off my info that way.
A Linux LiveCD will be less time consuming, but to each their own.

If you had a windows CD you could do a repair install to get your computer running so you could back up your data

Maybe, maybe not. This is a notoriously unreliable process.

Yeah, repair installs aren't that good.
What I usually do is:
1. Boot windows CD
2. Repair Console
3. chkdsk
Works about 95% of the time.
If it is Fat32 on the disk, a linux disk works a lot better, faster, and stronger.

Linux reads NTFS just fine for about 10 years now.

Yeah I know Linux can do NTFS. BUT.... Linux doesn't have very good NTFS diagnostic/repair tools. The ones that are available say to use chkdsk on windows if at all possible.
Except he doesn't need chckdsk, he needs to pull off data, which a Linux CD will do just fine. He can format and reinstall later, if the drive itself isn't screwed.

Sure, that's a valid point. I'd just re-image the drive, but that's worth a shot before moving the data and formatting.

he doesnt need to move data at all jesus how much extra work are you trying to give the fella. Ok it sounds like you may jsut have some corrupted files and the previous instructions about running chkdsk should be adequate. I would try that before doign all this HD removing and reimaging.
