I play EQ (yes, I know) and Saturday night my computer just shut down like it was overheating. It should be noted that the comp only shuts down during EQ play and not while surfing the web or playing videos.
I am pretty sure it isn't the fan as I just had my fan replaced in March. The fan is working, I can hear and feel it. The air it is spitting out doesn't seem to be too hot.
I don't think it could be the video card either as I just had that replaced towards the end of April. Also, the graphics do not in anyway go "haywire" before the comp just shuts down.
Does anyone have a clue what it could be? I don't want to drop the cash to get it fixed by a tech if it is something that can easily be fixed at home.

Could be a powersupply issue, which is what it sounds like to me. Sounds like you are drawing to much juice when you play EQ and it turns off. Since you said you did replace your Graphics Card and some fans this could be the problem.
If you want to see your process temp I suggest down loading coretemp. A quick google search should elad you where you want to go.

Also if your video drivers are old enough that's a possible, but much less likely cause.

I have a tough power 750 watt and I love it. I doubt you are pulling that much power but here are some good ones.
thermaltake toughpower 650w $160
The good thing about this one along with it being an excellent brand is that you have the option of only hooking up what you need verse normal powersupplies that have the standard x cables already attatched.
corsair 650w $99.00 after $10 mail in rebate (looks like its one sale from $150.)
Corsair's are also an excellent brand to get from and in all reality this looks like the best bang for buck. You get the same cable feature as the thermaltake one and its 50 bucks cheaper. Im sure your old power supply is about 100-300 so this will be over kill, but its good. If you upgrade some more stuff you probably wont have to buy another one which is good.

If your PC shuts down while playing EQ, it's just like putting a load on it. While just surfing the internet doesn't. Your PC will shut itself down if the CPU gets too hot, you may want to do a little research on a aftermarket CPU/Heatsink cooling fan, this is the one that mounts on top of your CPU. If your motherboard allows tweaking, then you can set a higher theshold temp in your bios before your PC shutsdown. A good place to look is: http://www.newegg.com
So, I brought my computer the local repair shop yesterday. Now this guy comes highly recommended from several people and best of all, he was not Best Buy.
He said that the fan on my graphics card was not working. He also checked my power source and said it was fine. He charged me $20 to replace the fan and I was on my way.
I get home, load up EQ and....after ten minutes of playing the computer shuts itself down again. Wonderful!

Unfortunatly you may have a bad powersupply like we stated above. Powersupplys tend to just go bad. No need to buy a new computer when you can just replace the power supply.
One other thing you could check is this:
See if your processor is getting to hot. Google coretemp and download it and run it for awhile. Run it during EQ to see how hot things are getting.
This really sounds like a powersupply issue like before though.

One more question...
I have a motherboard with built in graphics. If I switched my screen and used the motherboard instead of the vid card and it still shut down, that would mean its the power supply, right?

If you take the video card out and use your on board it will reduce the power. SO it may not shut off or it might. If you could post your entire rig ,we could help you better, but you havent posted what we have asked for.
If you can post the following we can better sum this up.
powersupply make/model/power
processor
graphics card
hard drive
ram
motherboard
Also as Angstycoder said check how you have your graphics card powered up. If you are overloading a rail(one strand of power connectors) then this will cause the problem. That information and a picutre or two would tell us what we need to know.

It probably won't. Discrete graphics normally draw a lot more power than integrated graphics.

I am having the same problem. I remember this happening when I played four years ago. It was a software issue that was solved with a patch or something. If memory serves me, running Everquest on some computers tells the computer to shut down after a certain time, it kind of tricks the computer into thinking it needs to shut down.
Does this ring a bell for anyone or sound feasible? I don't have access to the "Everquest Mentor" I had years ago, so I don't know what to do.

Like you said that was solved with a patch. So I doubt it is this. If the OP would post his computer we could figure it out.
