Laptop with nothing but Windows on it - can't play games...Follow

Hello...

So my computer just screwed up and they had to replace the hard drive. Best Buy, being the idiots they are, just installed Windows XP and lost all my other information.

I just bought Age of Conan and for some reason it wouldn't run, even after I installed DirectX9 and the latest Driver for my video card. What else do I need to download to get my computer back to what it was??

Thanks!!

While I agree BestBuy tech support are a bunch of idiots, how are they supposed to replace your software if you don't supply them with it?

Did you have AoC running before the crash or no?

Since you have provided absolutely no information, the only thing I can suggest is to update all your drivers, reinstall dx9/10 and any software you previously had installed.

They were supposed to back it up before replacing my hard drive, but they failed to do that. i.e.: a bunch of idiots.

No, I was not running AoC before they replaced it. But I was running WoW, EQ2, and FFXI (all older games, but I was running them quite well).

What information do you need? I mean all I'm asking is a general question: Is there anything else that I need to install/download/update besides the most updated driver and dx9??

Here's the problem: whenever I start AoC, all I get is some weird flashing black screen (I hear music though), and eventually after 10 seconds it fades to all black. Then, after a few more seconds, like half the screen becomes white... it's hard to explain, but that's pretty much it. I can hear the music the whole time.

Any suggestions?? Please...

Start -> Run -> dxdiag

Run all the tests and report back with any failures

If they had to replace the hard drive, odds are it was bad enough that an entry level tech couldn't back it up.

The worst game on that list is EQ2 and all those are designed to run on systems that would barely classify as middle ground. AoC is very hardware intensive compared to those.

List your hardware specs, CPU, Video chipset and memory would be a good start.

The dxdiag would be useful but not necessary.

On a side note, if your going to berate the Best buy tech support, it's generally a good idea to have a clue as to what your talking about.

Age of Conan might be a little intense for even top of the line laptops, right?

I don't know of very many laptops that run 512mb of dedicated video memory.

I agree but you do have to admit their tech support is anything but great.

AoC don't require 512mb, not sure where you are reading that. . .

Official Website
Minimum System requirements

* OS: Windows XP / Windows Vista
* GFX: Shader 2.0 and 128MB ram, GeForce 6600
* RAM: 1GB
* CPU: 3 GHz, Pentium 4
* Resolution: 1024x768

* Recommended Specs:
* CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,4 GHz or better
* GFX: nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX or higher
* RAM: 2 GB

Sounds like you have incompatible drivers or possibly not the newest version of directx. Make sure you have the latest version which is 9.0c (forgot the date).

Also make sure you have the correct drivers for your laptop as when they redo machines best buy has been known to install the wrong drivers for onboard items such as sound and video.

It's not required, it's recommended (and likely would be crap without it.)

And I'm sorry, but my old computer ran XP, had a 3.0Ghz pentium 4, had a 128MB video card. But it could barely run Command and Conquer 3. I doubt it would be running Age of Conan very well, if at all.

I do agree, I said I did in my first post.

512 is listed as the recommended which I read off the box sitting right next to me. Having played it, 512 is more of a requirement. I have an 8800GT and my graphics are just over medium settings.
