Radeon Stealth x1550 (was forum=21)Follow

I just upgraded my computer from the on-board GeForce 6100 nforce 405 to a Radeon stealth x1550 256mb. Everything seems installed correctly, but nothing looks any different. I'm running with Vista 32-bit, so it automatically disabled the on-board upon driver installation. I have 2gb ram and AMD Atholon 64x2 DCP 4200 2.20ghz. Shouldn't WoW run in mid-city with more than 15-20 fps? the only times I get more than 28fps is when I walk into a house or building (Inn, shop, and stuff)

I tried the hardware accelerator but it says the driver does not allow the use of it. It figured updating from 32mb video mem to 256 video mem would allow me to enjoy eye candy and smooth frame rates, but it doesn't seem that $80 was enough money spent to achieve that goal.

Can anyone steer me towards something I might be doing wrong?

It took me a little while to find the specific card and board your referring to but I found it.

The board only has a PCI-E x8 slot, most newer cards are x16. The card in question however will work as it's only a standard PCI card. The board doesn't support DX10 which is what WoW is using I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The card itself isn't bad, just old. Kind of high end, outdated technology. Again, only supports DX9.

Aside from the age, the only potential problem I can see is the required power. 420 watt required. While 420 isn't high, most PCs only come with a 300-400 watt PSU unless specifically ordered with something stronger.

With what your limited to, 20ish FPS sounds about right but I would check your PSU just to make sure. If your PSU is under 420 watts I would just start saving for a newer system.

I have been a die hard ATI fan for years but they are quickly falling behind NVidia.

As much as I hate to say it, Intel/NVidia is destroying AMD/ATI these days.
