I have an Xbox 360 and was wondering if you can buy any old wireless network adapter (Linksys, Hawking, Dynex, etc..) or do you have to buy the Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter for $99.99 which is $30-$50 more than the ones I mentioned. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

If you were Microsoft, and could guarantee a profit on every x-360 wireless card bought if you added code making everything else not work, or you could just let people use whatever they wanted then have to deal with tech support calls for other people's hardware not working, what would you do?

You do have the option of using a standalone wireless adapter that is self contained that you plug into the ethernet port. It costs about the same, but you could always use it on some other device if you decide to plug the X-box in etc.
