Digital to Analog Follow

Okay, I over-upgraded with my Radeon HD 2600 and now I've discovered that I can't run the second output to a coax converter like I thought I could. I've been debating what I could do that would cost less than an HDTV (since we don't want to buy a new TV until August when we move) and these are the options I've narrowed down:

- Suck it up and buy the smallest, cheapest HDTV around
- Find one of these mythical $40 digital to analog converters for our TV since the government will rebate us exactly that much (found one for like $180 so far.)
- Take advantage of the CrossFire capabilities of the Radeon HD 2600 and drop in a second video card!

Knowing me, any excuse to upgrade the computer is a valid one. But I'm limited by only having one PCIe x 16 slot. I have one PCIex1 slot and one regular old PCI slot left. Can I do this? Here are the specs on the box:

- Base box: HP Pavilion a6114x
- Downgraded to Windows XP
- AMD Athlon Dual Core 4000+ (2.1 GHz)
- Maxed out 4 gigabytes memory
- Onboard NVidia graphics(disabled)
- Radeon HD 2600 Pro

Requirements for the second card:
- Must be Radeon for CrossFire to work
- Preferably coax out
- If not coax, need composite out

Suggestions? Or. . . should I just wait until August and buy an HDTV then like I originally wanted?

LOL okay. Hey, it was on sale. And it WAS an upgrade over the onboard Nvidia.

So, recommendations for getting a "real" video card? Under $200 please, otherwise I might as well just get a damn HDTV after all.

(It was the dual video outputs and my budget combined that made me pick it over the other cards on sale.)

No Nvidia please; I just never liked them that much.

No, I understand. I've wanted things NOW and bought the overpriced "good enough" option lots of times.

This is a bad idea. Be it Nvidia vs ATI or Intel vs AMD, you should just go with the best price/performance deal at the time. Right now, that's Nvidia, and it's not a coin flip. AMD/ATI is (same company now) struggling to stay in business in the gaming/home PC market.

I'll give you both options, but also tell you that as a guy who doesn't care at all what's written on the box, the Nvidia GPUs are slaughtering the ATI offerings at the same price. Particularly in the ~$150 range.

Before we go too crazy, here, though, don't 2600Pros have S-Video out? Converting S-Video to RCA takes like a $5 adapter. When you say "second adapter" in the OP did you mean the second DVI or the S-Video?

I'd give that a shot before buying another card. Not that yours doesn't suck, but if you mainly use it for video-out, I'm sure it's dandy.

Ok, then.

Given your tastes, I'd go with something along these lines:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127303

Composite out for the TV, much better performance in games etc.

Around $100

Check that. You likely don't need 512 memory on the card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102703

$75, composite out.

If it were me:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130319&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL042208&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL042208-_-VideoCards-_-L0E-_-14130319

Promo Code: EMCAECCCE for -$20 before Monday. After rebate, around $150.

Jaw dropping performance. Possibly far more card than you'd ever need, though. Also, people I know into video tell me ATI does a better job on the TV out side, though I personally can't tell the difference, maybe you could.
