Hello,

I currently play FFXI on crapbox360 (2nd one in a year). My wife plays FFXI on laptop pc. I'm tired of the freeze-ups, disconnects, disk reading errors, etc of the 360 and im looking to switch to PC. But I dont have $2-3k to spend on a gaming PC.

I'm thinking of trying to build a gaming PC.

If I had a used destop PC tower, with say...(xp home, 1.2 P4, 512MB SDRAM, 80 gig, crappy 32MB nVidia graphics card). What would I need to purchase to make a decent gaming PC?

I tried WoW on my destop but wasnt compatible due to graphics card. I tried WoW on wife laptop and it played for a couple hours before turning the screen blue and causing a display error. Would like to play a little WoW also with the built PC.

So, any advice on decent priced components and possibly where to find them. I'm basically looking for a shopping list of PC upgrades/replacements with an approximate cost to get a decent gaming PC.

Thanks,

BTW- I'm a long time console player, looking to switch to PC. Atari, Sega, Sega Gen., Nin, Super Nin, Playstation, PS2, Xbox360

Alienware Area-51 7500

It's pretty cheap (1,200$) for a quality gaming PC.

If you just want to build your own or upgrade your current tower, look for a duo core processors, at least 2.0GB memory, and 250GB+ hard drive, and maybe a external hard drive. I don't know a lot about graphic cards, but I have a ATI Radeon X300 SE and it has run all MMO's that I have owned fine.

I hope my weak knowledge helps you out a little bit.

Mid range gaming PC for under $1000 Buy from a specialist company and you will find that you get a better PC for half the price of a Dell or PC world product.

Giant waste of money unless you're terrified of ******** things together.

Sell that for $50.

You can build a PC that will play any game for $500. It won't play any game at 1920x1200 at 60fps, but if you're just looking for "playable" at normal non enthusiast resolutions, definitely.

I do not reccomend the 700 series nforce motherboards.

IIRC, neither did I!

Glad it's mostly working out the way you hoped, though.

I have just upgraded my PC.

Here's what I had:

AMD 64 3200+
1gb ram
7800GT OC

Here's what I got for ~1200$

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 ~250$-260$
2x XFX GeForce 9600 GT XXX 512MB in SLI setup ~210$ each
P6N diamond mobo with 680i chipset ~210$
4GB OCZ hight quality ram ~115$

With this stuff - NOTHING lags. Ever. And this system is SOOO easy to overclock too..

With 5 minutes of lazy overclocking I got 15000+ in 3D Mark 06

This upgrade has the best price/performance ratio I could find.

I've seen people overclock this cpu by a stable 1GH. ONE GIGAHERTZ XD

Anyhow, hope I helped...

If you want more direct help P.M. me I am pretty price savy...I have upgraded our computers at work, built all the PCs I've ever owned and am currently building my cousin a gaming PC for my cousin for about 1300$.
