Spyware and Virus help.Follow

#1 Mar 29 2008 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
I've been having some problems with my computer recently and they're interfering with my internet connection (Only wireless) and my WoW gaming, and thats's no good at all. I was wondering if anybody could point me to some good, free virus/spyware scanners that I can run to help the problem.
Any other helpful tips are appreciated too.
Thanks.

Pretty much all of the major AV vendors offer a free scan & 30-day trial. That might be a good way to see if your system is currently affected.

Free AV programs include AVG and Avast. I've used AVG with good results, but it isn't as strong of defense as most commercial AV programs. I've heard that Avast is better, but I have never tried it myself.

For spyware, free scanners include AdAware & SpyBot. They are both reasonably good at scanning for current spyware programs on your computer. I have heard that AdAware is the better option right now, but they go back and forth.

I run spybot and Norton Systemworks and haven't had a virus problem the five years I've owned this computer. Granted I pay yearly for Norton (can't remember how much...should be around $25-$35 a year) but I seriously consider it a good investment considering the threat viruses are these days.

Little old on the post but I use McAfee, Spybot and Ad-Aware for my AV/spyware protatection. For other security, I use PC Tools Firewall+ and Threatfire. So far, this set up has worked well for me.

For a free AV though, you could swap out McAfee for AVG and use the same other software, all of that is free except the McAfee.

I use AVG and Microsoft Defender.

Yes, it's MS; yes, you have to do the whole Genuine Advantage verification; but it's the best laid-out and least intrusive to your daily goings about the internet, in my opinion. Also free, surprisingly.
