Unable To Click Start Or Task Bar.Follow

As the title says, after a reboot, or my system sits idle for awhile, it won't let me click anything on the task bar, to include the start icon.

I can right click the desktop, and left click all the icons on the desktop, but if I open one of them, it won't let me left click to close it on the X in the upper right corner, or if I right click a window at the bottom, it won't let me left click the close option. It has to be a software issue as the mouse itself is fine on my other computer, and I am 100% virus free. I am running windows XP professional and am completely lost at this point, help please!

Edit: Another thing, if I use the windows key on my keyboard to open the start menu, then left click something on it, like my internet icon, it just closes the start menu.

What you describe sounds like an extreme case of low resources, possibly ram or HDD space. That or a virus (could be acompromised virus scanner).

Only other thing I can think of would be either the USB or PS2 ports are having some sort of issue, possibly a board short.

Have 3 gigs of RAM and 200 gig HD, just bought this thing 3 days ago. How would I go about checking my ports?
