New video card problems...Follow

#1 Mar 22 2008 at 3:17 PM Rating: Decent
I just bought a new video card and had Best Buy's Geek Squad install it. It seems to be working fine except for EQ. EQ doesn't seem to recognize it. Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks

what video card (make model) and chances are geek squad didn't update the drivers, so if its an nvidia card you'll want to get the latest ones.

The card type would help...sorry

ATI Radeon HD 2400 series - AGP 8X w/256 MB

I actually think they installed it wrong as my graphics on my whole comp, not just EQ, went nuts and I have needed to reboot like 10 times.

I will be bringing it back to them after work and giving them an earful.

Just an update, I brought my comp back to the store and it appears that the updated drivers associated with the new card are corrupted. The downloads are corrupted on ATI's website as well as mirror sites.

Do not buy an ATI HD series graphics card unless you want corrupted drivers.

There are two possible things occuring here. Either. 1, ATI which manufactures millions of graphics cards has drivers that don't work for a gigantic game played by millions, or 2, the 19 year old slapping your comp with his balls at the big box store is lost and lying to you.

I see you've chosen to believe that #1 is true. If you PM me, I have some very important information about my cousin in Nigeria who needs your help.

Smash, why can't we be friends.

OK, the only driver we were able to download was the one from the CD that came in the box. I personally went to ATI's site when the problem started occuring to download and got the message that driver was "not compatable" and went back to the store. The Geek Squad member got the same message on ATI's site and went to a mirror site and...got the same message. So, we came to the conclusion that the driver was corrupted.

Why do I find myself explaining things to you all the time Smiley: confused

That was your conclusion. Not that the previous instillation hadn't removed the registry entries and files associated with the PREVIOUS video card's driver which are now causing problems with the new driver, but that the ATI driver from the site, and from a mirror of the site were "corrupt". That the millions of people who will download that driver today will get a corrupt driver file, not that he ****** up installing your card.

Think it through for a tenth of a second.

First problem is you had Geek Squad install your card, never give anything to those people they ***** up more then they fix, however my friends are all morons and still go back to them.

I agree with Smash, sounds like they didn't do a clean install on your card by removing all previous drivers before installing the new drivers. Drivers being "corrupt" don't happen sorry, they are tested to hell and back and must meet at least a 80% compatibility rating before even being released as a beta set.

I would suggest you take it to someone who knows what they are doing, have them do a clean install of the drivers then you shouldn't have any problems. More then likely I bet the morons at Geek squad installed the wrong drivers all together which I could believe easily.

Smash, my first problem was that I should have listened to you in an earlier thread about what video card to buy. I didn't and I went for the cheaper ATI card to save a few bucks. I should have bought the Nvidia 7600 AGP card you recommended (that is what is currently in my comp now). Thank you for the recommendation. I appreciate your help on that.

OK, on the the original card I purchased. As I stated before, I use a AGP slot for my card. I originally bought the ATI Radeon HD 2400 series - AGP 8X w/256 MB. By clicking here you can see that ATI only offers a driver for the PCIE card, not the AGP. Why sell a card and not offer a driver for it?

So, maybe you guys were correct in stating that the word "corrupted" was wrong. I will admit that. I am no computer expert either.

Thanks for all your help.

Actually they do make driver for it however AGP cards are dated. Sounds like you went to Nvidia which is a wise move.

If you are still interested you need to use the ATI 7.8 Driver only, not the full catalyst you can also download drivers here which work for it.

If you don't need this information just discard it however there is where you need to go.
