Video card suggestion!Follow

This is arriving tomorrow: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107510

I want to get a PCIex16 video card for it, but I'm on a severely cramped budget since I wasn't actually supposed to buy this PC for another couple of months (but the deal was too good to pass up. $130 off? {Yes please.})

What's the best card I can get for under $100? Under $50? Is there anything under $30 that isn't made of LOL?

All it has to do is play FFXI, btw, so don't worry about me having the best specs for the "latest 3D games."

If you want to spend under $100

Asus 8500 Video card should be more than enough to not only play Final Fantasy but probably even some of the more modern games.

The first thing you might want to do though is install final fantasy on your new system and see how well it runs. If it runs slower than you would like then you'll have to buy yourself a new video card but if it runs just fine I'd say stick with it.

At work I'm using a ATI7000 which according to SE isn't even supposed to run FF yet it runs ok. Wouldn't want to do dynamis with it but I have done some other events with it.

Yeah, I'm gonna muck around with it tonight and see if I can get a crippled install of XI going without a video card. If I can, I can survive two weeks until the next paycheck (on $89 after this, LOL) and then pay for a much better video card than what I can afford right now.

Looks like I can get a crippled XP install on there after all, so in two weeks I can grab a real video card.

New PCs are so much fun!

I just bought this EVGA GeForce 7600GT for a new box I'm going to be building as soon as I get my tax refund or "economic stimulus" check.

It's $65 after the rebate. (Which expires January 31.)

I don't plan on installing Vista any time soon, so I don't need DirectX 10.

I don't plan on playing anything much more graphically challenging than WoW any time soon, so I don't need an 8800 GTX overclocked water cooled monster. Plus I like to keep my electric bill as low as I can.

It gets high customer ratings, and it has a VGA port, which matches my monitor. (I hate having a bunch of junk hanging off my computer.)

Worth a look, in my opinion.

Mmmmm, even though FFXI is an older game than WoW, the graphics can be ramped up to much cleaner resolutions than WoW supports. I'm trying for the best resolution I can get, which is a BG resolution in the 2000-4000 DPI range to force antialiasing from the hardware. When it's made to run like that, FFXI is a gorgeous game.

8500 huh? You CAN get a better, faster one, and MIR too!

This one is better, and can handle everything exceptionally well.

30MIR FTW :D
I had this before I got my 8800GTS SLI combo. :)

that card should do you pretty well. Again, it all depends on what you want to do with your system. If you only want to play an outdated (graphics-wise) MMO then a low-midrange card should be fine. It also depends on what settings you want to have with it, I use a 24'' monitor and run at 1920x1200 with most settings maxed so I spent a bit of money on my graphics card. If you only want to play at 1152x864 or 1280x1024 (common for a 19'' monitor) then a mid-range card will be fine. A 7600 or 8600 would be my lowest recommendation. I like to play upcomming games as well, so I would personally spring around $200 (save up for it if you can) and get an 8800gt one of the best gaming cards for the dollar and should last a bit.

Good call. It's pretty fantastic for the price.

Also a good call.

Wow what an unusual post for this forum.

Ugh. I hope it was near free.

It was a refurbished HP 2007 model for $350. Not free, but basically recouping the cost of the hardware. I'm mucking around with the Vista on it until I get tired of it or used to it . . . saved my XP OEM from the last computer which went to the PC graveyard.

You're knowledgeable about this sort of thing, I'd guess. Is XP 64 worth getting for a dual core? Or will my XP 32 perform better? I've heard conflicting stories.

Almost certainly not. Driver support for it sucks and there's pretty much no advantage at all to using it on a home desktop.

64bit is only good if you plan to run 4gb+ of memory.

Yeah, I have 2 gigs now and I was planning on grabbing another 2 gig stick with the video card. (Pay day tomorrow! Mmmmm solvency.) I noticed that Excel 2007 is an enormous resource hog, and I'm hoping the extra 2 gigs will fix it.
