I don't know much about computers, though I would like to. But I have a question...The fan on my HP computer is running very loud, maybe even as fast as it can, about every 5 minutes, even when there is no one on it. You can hear it from upstairs in my house. I know I could probably find this on any internet website associated with computers, but I thought it would be better to have you guys tell me.
Specs on the computer:
Intel Pentium 4 processor
1.0 GB DDR SDRAM
250GB hard drive
I know it sucks, it's from 2001. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

I can only speak from my own experience with the same problem. My fan did the same thing and died about 2 weeks later.
I'm not sure how one tests a fan. It's why I married a computer guy! *grins*

Heh well thanks. My computer actually did die 2 weeks ago. A new Power Supply fixed it. I know, I should have posted this earlier since it's been doing this for a month.
Did you ever dust the inside of your comp and fans with compressed air?
Not with compressed air, but yes.
HP computers often use a single case fan to cool their processors. it is a stupid, obsolete design, and if that fan is failing you may not be getting adequate cooling. the motherboard detects this, tries to ramp up the RPM to compensate.
What you need to do is first blow all the dust out of your case and the fan with one of those computer air cans they sell in computer stores (or an airbrush compressor if you have one) From there, find all your fans, and blow them out too. If they are still having issues, replace them wiht new fans. If that doesn't do the trick, consider steppign up to a better case with better airflow. Your components will last longer.

For some reason I never took the Air Compressor I bought and cleaned out my computer, so I will do that later today. Ya, I have lived with the mass amount of noise all this time, and I am just sick of not being able to hear in other rooms, let alone the speakers that are a foot away from me.

Air compressor is the best idea to start with it, it can do miracles at times (and add a few years to your computer's life span) You dont want to choke to death, it doesnt want to choke to death!

Ya, the air compressor's at Ace Hardware here in town are 8$, so my dad is gonna pick me up one at work for free. So I guess I will dismantle my computer tomorrow night.
Thanks for all the suggestions. If the air compressor doesn't work, I might just buy a whole new computer, this one is pretty outdated.
