You're running a notebook? What game are you having the crap frame rates in?

Your card will be sharing memory with the RAM of the system. FFXI is fairly intense on the memory usage. Disable options in FFXI for shadows and effects and see what changes occur.

I have an 8600M GS, too, and I also have problems with low FPS (not as low as 5 in general, but when i get to even lightly populated areas i get as low as 2).
This infuriates me, as I have an nvidia gf ti4600 with an athlonxp2600+ in a desktop that blows this framerate out of the water.

(Laptop is a core 2 duo 2ghz, 2gb ram, gf 8600M GS)

In response to the 'ram usage' post, my 4600 has 128M video ram and 1GB system, while my 8600 has 256M Dedicated video ram, and can use some of the 2gb of system ram. There should be absolutely no issues with that at relatively sane settings.

Also, I, too, am using vista, and have tried a few different drivers. Over the next few days I'll be trying more, and I'll report back on how they work out :|

That is your problem.

Almost all Nvidia 8 series cards have horrible driver compatibility with Final Fantasy XI. You may want to check out some of the drivers over at 3dguru.com as they have some of the better 8 series drivers that Nvidia for some strange reason will not put out.

Nvidia in my opinion has pretty much written off supporting the 8 series cards for older games even though they support and are branded right on the Playonline.com website. There is a huge fuss going on about the 8 series cards and it generally recommended you stay away from them if you wish to play Final Fantasy XI.

I have a dual 8800 SLI computer that I can't use when I play because of this, I go back to an older machine running a 7950GT card and it never looks so good.

There is an external AGP (And I think PCI Express) box you can buy for your laptop so you can use full desktop video cards.

Something similar to this;
