I'd like to be able to input Cable or other video sources (like consoles) on my Computer's Monitor. I thought about those TV Tuner Cards or the such, but I've heard really bad things about them, and my roommate back in college had one and the quality was pretty crappy.

I was thinking maybe a stand alone box that I could hook up a video source (Cable, Game Consoles, etc.) and my Computer to that would let me select which input goes to the monitor.

Anyone have any recommended products? I'm not so much worried about the price, more just the quality of the product.

You can try this;
http://www.merconnet.com/product_info.php?products_id=533

Merconnet has a lot of fun toys. If this is not what you were looking for just do a google search for VGA box and you should get plenty of results.

Make sure it's both CRT and LCD compatible otherwise you kind of limit yourself.

Thanks, every time I tried to search for it, I always came up with PC to TV type things, always displaying your computer on a TV... which isn't what I wanted to do.

I can't tell by reading the stats on that device, but can I keep my computer on and connected to the unit, and just flip back and forth between TV and what would be on my Computer? It doesn't look like I could, unless I used the S-video on my video card...

I will be honest I have never used this exact model I have used something similar which does allow you to turn off the unit and switch it like you are thinking such as alt - tabbing.

I would suspect this is the same, however I don't know.

"Usually" this is just a window application which plugs into the unit, so you should be able to "software" providing will even allow you to run it in a window mode.

I use a tv tuner card right now and the quality is fairly good. MY problem is I have dish, and dish won't let me actually use the card correctly. I can't change channels on my laptop, only watch whatever the tuner is set to.

Correct I think you have this problem even with digital cable boxes as the box needs an input not the tv tuner hooked to your computer.

Basically the TV tuner is an input device, the problem comes from not having a remote cable to hook up from my dish to my TV tuner card. Thus I can't control the dish. It doesn't help that Dish is teh evil.
