New graphics card.Follow

#1 Jul 06 2007 at 10:31 AM Rating: Decent
Alright, so I'm looking for a new graphics card for my computer.

Problem is the one I currently have is onboard, will that cause any problems if I go for a new one?

I do have open PCI slots.

I'll copy system specs from my dxdiag:

Operating System: Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ (2 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
Memory: 2gigs RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
(For the card)
Display Memory: 394 MB
Dedicated Memory: 122 MB
Shared Memory: 271 MB

The card I'm looking at is: This one.

I don't /need/ a new card just yet. But this one is DX10, and way cheaper than an 8800, and smaller too, so I'm looking to just be ready when the time comes where games need the dx10.

Would that card work with my system at all?
Would I be able to run both the 8600 and the 6150 at the same time, or just one?

If you need to know anything else, let me know.

As a rule, when you already have onboard video, you simply need to go into the system BIOS and set it to look at the AGP/PCI-e/PCI slot instead. It's one setting and very easy to do. Then shut the PC off, install the card, reboot and let the system detect it. Drop the CD in the drive and have the system look at the CD for the drivers or simply cancel the auto-detect and run the install right off the CD-ROM. Either way works really.

In regards to this card, you can actually get this one for about 70 bucks less that will do about as nice a job for you. It isn't overclocked but it handles gaming quite well.

Yeah, that's what my buddy told me about the ease of turning off the onboard.

How long do you think the one you linked will be useful for, though? As opposed to the one I was looking at.

What I'm looking for right now is a card that will be able to run Warhammer Online and Age of Conan when they come out, smoothly.

Money isn't really a problem, but I just don't especially want to drop 400 on an 8800 either, so I'm looking for what would be most useful for the longest time, that isn't in the 8800 series.

Well, in regards to how long it will be competitive, that's a hard one to judge. I use a 6200 Turbocache right now that handles every game I play and has for about a year but I know I will need a newer one soon for AOC and other games. I find that most hardware has an active life of around 3 to 6 months for the "best and fastest" crowd. For the average gamer, either card will do you for at least a year I would say.

The only downside I can see with it is it wouldn't support DX10 afaik. But if you have the cash for the superclocked one, go for it. I just look for alternatives for folks since I do PC builds for a living :) Sometimes people only have one item to work with cause they aren't aware there are other options.

Your HP/CompaQ/Sony/whatever computer in a box's power supply will almost without question choke on the 8600 GTS. An 8800 is out of the question entirely.

The 8600 GT would be a massive upgrade from where you are now, and only has about a 10% chance of frying your machine.

Good luck.
