I have a problem, one of my friends is joining the game, but can't get the IT admin at her college to open the massive amounts of ports FFXI asks for.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to route FFXI through different (And preferably less) ports, or if there is any other solution to the problem.

Admins do this for a good reason to traffic content and also bandwidth. The only way to get a connection while on campus is usually to use a wireless antenna and "burrow" someone's wireless connection however that is not pratical in all area's.

If using wireless is not an option then sadly you will not be able to play as the Admin will not start opening ports unless it's for a very good and legit reason. This also rules out using a proxy as the content is being blocked from the local server side via software or hardware firewall.

If your friend knows the admin well enough you could have him setup a drop with special rules coming from that ip address to bypass the firewall however that requires the admin liking you enough to do it.

Dial up seems to be gaining popularity in college campuses for FFXI because of this. I play on dial up and BB and can notice little difference in them, other than the time it takes to download an update. (Oh, and random disconnects.. expect at least one every night on dial up.)
