Motherboard & RAMFollow

Hello, is there a program or site that will detect what type of RAM my motherboard takes, and I need a place to purchase this RAM at also. My pc is pretty old. It's running only on 256 MB of RAM (which only 248 shows up in my "Control panel" system specs). I have a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 gfx card. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, Service pack 2, Pentium 4 2.40 GHz Processor. And I definitely need one hell of an upgrade.

I'm looking to purchase 2 GB+ of RAM for this, whatever type it is.

But I'm also wondering, would just purchasing RAM allow everything on this PC to run better? See, I enrolled in college classes online for computer programming, and since i'm no good with hardware, I thought a RAM Upgrade would be nice... but, I have no clue what kind of RAM this thing takes!

So:

RAM Identifier
Place I can purchase this type for cheap
Will it allow my pc to run Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 smoothly?
A tutorial for putting RAM into a PC.

If you can point out any of those, please post. Anything thats helpful, please. Thank you very much!

if you can find out what motherboard you have, you should be able to look it up.

They have an app you can run that will tell you what kind of RAM is compatible with your system, how many slots you have open, and what you need to buy to hit your target number for how much RAM you want.
