So here's the deal.

We got 2 laptops with the same game installed. Far Cry. We want to hook them up together as a local area network, so we can of course play on the same map etc. How can we go about doing this or with another FPS game?

We tried hooking them both up to a router, and even though both computers recognized the router, we could not both get into the game together. One person would be hosting the game from their computer, and the other person could not connect. Are there any other options to get this setup? Maybe by not using a router at all and just connected both computers directly with an ethernet cable? Or a hub? Or would we need to type in that set of numbers in the web address box to get to the router config?

It's our first time trying to set this up and it's rather frustrating lol, if anyone could give some advice we'd really appreciate it. Thanks! Smiley: laugh

If both machines are able to get onto websites then they are properly being assigned network addresses by your router and are both part of the network.

If that's the case then something like a software firewall might be causing the problem on one or both of the machines. Try disabling them outright and seeing what happens.

You can test the basic connectivity by using "ping".

Go to a command prompt (Start->run->cmd->enter).

Type in "ipconfig" to find out the ip addresses of the machines and type "ping <other machines IP adress>". If you get a response from both PC's then the connection is fine and it's a problem with the game.

Sorry, I should have specified, that we are not hooked up to the net, we are just at work slacking, and would like to play together on the same map etc. does this make a difference?

No, internet does not really matter it's just a means of testing things. If you've both got access to all the network resources then you are both on the network and should be able to communicate with each other. Try the ping test I described and that will give you some answers.
