I started up my computer (Windows XP Corporate w/ SP2, 1GB of RAM, Athlon XP 3200+ @ 1.25GHz, 300GB hard drive) this morning with no problems. It's the first time I've done so since Friday (I was out all weekend, my computer was off).

For some terribly odd reason, I cannot start any media (audio/video) programs, nor FFXI.

Now, I've checked the Event Viewer, and I haven't found any errors or warnings. I've done a malware & virus scan, but they cannot find anything.

What could possibly be the problem?

Are you getting error messages or anything?

I wasn't able to use my A/V recording software because it couldn't itnitialize the capture devices, and for some odd reason the drivers had all messed up. I uninstalled them, rebooted and Windows picked up the hardware again, reinstalled the drivers and all was well.

What Wint suggested is a very good idea.

Also try re-installing directx.
