File sharing on a home wireless network...Follow

Hello it's me again.

I have a Network Everywhere Wireless B router model NWR11B (Crappy I know, but it works, somewhat).

I'm trying to set it up so I can access the files on my desktop that is down stairs with my laptop when I'm in my living room upstairs. I've enabled file sharing on the folders I want to share (on Windows XP), but for some reason I can't get the desktop to show up on the laptop.

I tried Window's wireless networking wizard with no results.

Should I just get a new router? I had a Microsoft router that was a dream to set up, very easy but I was borrowing it from my brother in law and had to give it back. I found a decently priced Belkin at Best Buy, but was wondering if anyone had tips or links to walk throughs that I might try first.

If both computers can access the internet, the issue is not with the router.

Are they both part of the same Workgroup?

Ok I was able to get it all hooked up. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work earlier but now it's running.

Are there any tweaks that would speed up the connection between the two PCs? I'm wondering if it's just because my Laptop is very slow.

Beleive it or not service pack 2 for XP really does speed up networking, I used to get terrible lag on my home network when i'd try to access the shared folder on my file server.

Post service pack 2 the delay is almost non-existant, if you haven't got it on your XP machines then it's a good idea.

You could always try mapping the network drives so you can access them as if they are local drives rather than wade through the network neighbourhood (blecch) every time.

Beyond that there's probably not a whole lot you can do except upgrade to Gigabit LAN, which is very, very impractical in your case.

I'm not sure that this laptop meets the minimum requirements for XP otherwise I would be tempted, I'm running Windows 2000 on it right now and it's extremely slow.

I didn't think about mapping the drives (I should have, I do it all the time at work) so I'll give that a go.
