Hello everyone, I have just recently up graded my Graphics card significantly (sp?)and yet I still experience lag in Final Fantasy XI, if not more.

-Old graphics card - Nvidia GeForce4 MX440 SE (64mb)
-New graphics card - Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 (256mb)

The guy at Best Buy said this would be ideal for FFXI, maybe there is something else I need to upgrade, I get paid this Friday so a response would be wonderful before then.^^

-System specs. - 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 processor
512mb DDR SDRAM
80GB Hard drive

I did a defragment and I have 80% space left on my Hard drive , I have no idea what else to upgrade, (please) (Help me out.)^^

Thanks a lot, so getting 1G of RAM might work, do you know the average price of that?

1 question, do you have one 512 stick or two 256 sticks?

If you have a 512 stick go get another 512 stick and make sure it's the same speed as the one you have. If your using two 256 sticks drop them both and go get two 512 sticks. Make sure you get the proper type for your board.

512 sticks run about $100 - $120 on average.

The memory is more than likely your problem. Once you upgrade to 1 gig you will notice a HUGE differance.

How would I find out if I have 2 sticks or just one? And, "If you have a 512 stick go get another 512 stick and make sure it's the same speed as the one you have." Does this mean, go out and buy another 512 stick, not a 1GB. . . what would that do?

Oh wait, sorry . . . I get it now, there are two slots, and if I am filling one with 512 then I should get another 512 . . . got it, thanks.^^

>.< Another question, when I put the new stick in the slot, does it automatically(sp?)do something, or do I have to mess with things, like replace something else, or switching something to the new Stick or anything, I am not too familiar with RAM . . .

Your machine will automatically detect what you have.

Installing RAM is the easiest thing you can do. Drop it in there and Windows should recognize it.

I thought 512 was enough for FFXI, though. That video card isn't really top of the line, but if you don't have the settings maxxed, your system should run lag-free. Make sure you have the latest drivers and DirectX installed before you spend any more money. Use the software on http://www.drivercleaner.net to make sure the latest drivers from nVidia's site install cleanly.

I have tried lowering the settings, but it does nothing, less lag, but still around the same amount as when I had my old 64MB Card, I am about to run that driver cleaner thing, I seem to get a lot of lag when I use "Boost" or score a critcal. I think it's the blurryness.

It's do to the amount of graphics your memory is trying to process. While your memory card has more than enough memory to handle everything it still has to go through your system memory.

I blew one of my 512 dimms a few months back which dropped me down to 512 total. The more on-screen graphics the worse the lag gets.

Try this to be sure. Turn off, or to the lowest setting, all non required in-game graphics and play like that for awhile and see how the lag is. Then turn them all on, or to the max setting, and play like that for awhile. See if you notice a differance. If you do, upgrade your memory.

While I agree with highRfrequenC that memory is one of the easiest things to install, it is also one of the easiest things to ***** up and one of the worst things you want to ***** up.

If you look at the memory stick you should see a notch in the bottom of the memory. You will also notice that while it's in the middle it's not the exact middle. Look at the memory slot on your motherboard and you should see a bump in the slot. Make sure the bump and the notch line up when you put the new memory in. You should also see a latch on each side of the memory slot. Each of these latches should have a small bump on them as well. The new memory will also have a small notch on each end of it. Again make sure these bumps on the latches sit properly inside the notches on the new memory. If they don't your memory probably isn't seated properly, which can cause alot of problems.

1 last thing and I can's stress this enough. Make sure your getting the proper type of memory for your computer. Best bet would be to write down exactly what you have (should be a small sticker on the one already installed in your PC) and take it with you when you go to get your new one.
