Unable to update FFXIFollow

I'll try to explain this as best I can.

In a nutshell, I have FFXI and POL installed properly, but when applying the update the client will reach 99% on a certain file, and then stop. No matter how long I leave the patch running (tried 8, even 10 hours) it doesn't move.

I've tried everything I can think of:

- Reinstalled the game, from my CDs and then from my girlfriend's CDs just in case that might have been the problem.
- Reformatted my computer. I'm now installing the game on a completely fresh slate, no change.
- Had my girlfriend send me the file it was stuck on, only to have the patcher make some progress but get stuck on another file (this one was 99.dat, which FFXI has around 150 different versions of this same file with the same name in various folders, I have no way of knowing which it's stuck on, and sending me 150 files is not a solution I want to go for.)

The only other thing I can think it might be is a problem with my router or cable modem, but I really don't know as much about networking as I do other things. I tried unplugging my router and just having my PC plug directly into the cable modem, but that didn't make the problem stop either.

I'm posting here in hopes that someone might have seen a similar problem and could help me out. Sorry if it's been posted before, since I'm not a premium member I can't use the search function.

I have contacted Square, who referred me to my ISP tech support, who then referred me to Square...

The Square tech support guy thought it sounded like an installation problem, but like I said I've used different CDs and reformatted my computer so I doubt that's the problem. He then said it could be a network issue that I'd have to resolve with my ISP.

ISP checked out my line and modem and said it was perfect, that if I had any issues they were either with my PC or with the game software, and to contact the makers of the game.

In other words, still no idea how to fix it. :(
