Recently, about a month or so once or twice my phone line has been getting staticy... Today, it happened again. I pick up the phone and there is no dial tone. All there is is white noise then after a minute some louder white noise and then some softer and repeats...

I figured out what the problem is/was. Apparently my fu[/b]cking cat urinated all over one of the phone jacks while he was marking his usual territorry...something I do not allow him to do and which is quickly rewarded with a blow to whichever part of him I can catch first. So anyway, the phone plugging in jack is corroded, but I have no idea about the wall jack itself...

Basically every 10 or so minutes, I get disconnected from the internet. Actually no. I can't explain it. I am using a DSL connection so it is definitely related to the phone jack thingie...

Anyway, it doesn't kick me off. It allows me to play ffxi for the time being while I am connected sometimes, but it kicks me off of IM services and times out on all web pages.

So. what can I do? And how much can it cost? Including the added opportunity cost of throwing out the fu[/b]ck-witted cat.

It sounds like you are losing your connection. FFXI doesn't drop you automatically when your connection goes down. It's a feature of the game. Other Apps, i.e. IM, IE, Netscape, etc, will make it obvious when your connection is down. Watch the WAN light on your modem, this will start to flash when you lose connectivity.

As a fix, try plugging the modem into a different phone jack and run longer cat-5 if needed. Another thing you could do, is rewire the wall jack from the NID with cat-5 or cat-3. You only need to use the standard 2 wires (Blue and Blue-striped on cat-5).

Also, make sure all of your micro-filters are in working condition. Broken ones can and will cause static on the line.

It really does, trust me. If my ADSL connection drops out and comes back up in a short time FFXI bites the dust like no-ones business.

Especially if you happen to be on a dynamic IP address.
