why is my processor running at half speed??Follow

#1 May 20 2005 at 11:04 PM Rating: Decent
i just got a p4 3.0GHz ht processor and it is only running at 1.50 GHz 399 bus speed. the normal bus speed should be 800 mhz

i checked intel and couldnt find any sort of driver to download for it. i dont know if there is one or i just couldn't find it.
i really have no clue when it comes to computer processors. this is the first ive installed myself and i dont know why it isnt working properly. i was told that my motherboard could support a 3.06 GHz processor from compaq customer support. I dont see why a 3.0 wouldn't be compatible. In any case id like to try all other options before returning my processor.

i dont know what to do and im sure its only at half speed i downloaded the id software from intel to be sure.

The first thing to try is to check what your CPU is being reported as when your system POST's (i.e. that black screen you get when you first switch your machine on). If it's only being reported as 1.5 Ghz then you might want to try increasing your FSB (front side bus) speed to double what it is now and see if it makes a difference. Being a compaq you might need to press a button (usually 'tab' or 'esc') to actually see the POST screen as opposed to the Compaq splash screen.

It might be worth flashing your BIOS with a newer version in case your older BIOS doesn't support your CPU. Please don't ask me for advice on how to do this, you should be speaking to Compaq. As a general rule you should always call them first and tell them what is happening as you've paid for the right to ring their support line when you bought the machine. They'll be able to give you a definite answer if you new CPU is compatible and you can work ffom there.

ok i downloaded the new bios patch which i found out i needed. but it still didnt fix the problem. I dont know how to increase the front side bus. Ive never had to do any of this before like i said so if you could give me a run down on how to do it that would be great

edit:

oh ya compaq wont give me tech support anymore either because my warranty is apparently now void from installing my new prcessor

Are you sure that when you checked, the computer is NOT makinga high pitched noise and doing what is known as throttling?

I have a 530J processor, and it throttles once in a while. Throttle, meaning reduce its performance by half or so in order to lower its temperature so that the core doesn't...errrr...vaporize;-)

well to answer angsty i dont know how to check what motherboard i have. i havent even owned a windows computer for a year. i fyou could tell me i can give the info.

for the second response how loud is this highpitched noise? i havent heard anything so far but if it isnt noticable i could have missed it.

In order to check what motherboard you have, theres a nice utility called Everest by [link=www.lavalys.com] www.lavalys.com.[/link] You can download it at http://www.lavalys.hu/downloads/everesthome200.exe. Just install it, run it, select Computer and then Summary and it should show your specs. it will definitely find the motherboard unless it is like 4+ years old.

For the second response, the high-pitched sound is not loud. Actually, for some reason, only I noticed it when it throttles. Try listening closely when you are doing something that takes up a lot of processing power. If it always runs at the speed aforementioned, make sure the heatsink and fan for the processor are firmly on.

In any case, run Everest and check the specs it gives you.

*******************************************

Also, I just noticed that you said it can support a 3.06GhZ. Can you state exactly which processor you bought and which versions it supports? the 3.0GHz is a Pentium 530/J. Are you sure that the CPU socket matches the socket supported on the motherboard. THe Pentium 530/J is an LGA775 chip also known as Socket T. Make sure your motherboard wasn't a Socket 478 or something motherboard...not sure how that could happen, but then again, you aren't providing much information.

ok well here is all the info on my fsb my mobo and my processor.also my processor is 478 pin becuase thats what my mobo is. and im pretty sure tere is no high pitchd noise. my compy is runnign at a cool 39c so i think its ok.

You are in a bit of trouble my friend, your motherboard supports a maximum front side bus of 533 MHz, not the 800 that your chip requires. That's the difference between the 3.06GHz and the 3.0GHz models, you've been caught out.

The best option for you is probably a Celeron D 335 2.8GHz (BX80546RE2800C) or the P4 2.8Ghz Prescott which runs at 533MHz (BX80546PE2800E) judging by what you've bought your better option would be the 2.8 Prescott.

You'd need to buy new RAM for a new motherboard as the RAM in your machine is more than likely PC2100 (266MHz) not PC3200 (400Mhz) that you're going to need for your new CPU. I don't like your chance of just being able to drop a new motherboard into your Compaq as their front connectors are alomst always proprietary parts, you might need a new case too. You can check this by follwing the leads from the front of the machine and seeing if they all join together, if they do then you'll need a new chassis.

For the second quesiton...

You'd need to bump your Front Side Bus speed up in the BIOS if you can. There's a good chance you Compaq machine will NOT allow you to do this so you might be a bit stuck.

sell the CPU on Ebay and buy one of the one's recommended earlier.

well im gonna go back to my old celeron for now and just savve up and buy a new computer entirely. im not wasting any more money on this compy. thanks for all the help. i have to a 30 dollar restocking fee but its better than sellign it for 140 on ebay. thanks all
