hi im having an issue with my laptop i was hoping one of you out there can help me with. its to do with the cooling system. im not sure if this is an issue with all laptop computers, since this is the first ive owned, but when im using it, often it will over-heat and shut off. this kinda screws me over to even think about playing eq2 or wow on it, even though it fully meets the game req's. btw its a toshiba and about 12 months old.
so what im wondering is, is there any way to keep a laptop cool enough to use it like how i want to? or is this problem due to poor design? any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Wow, and I thought this was only me ^^. Yeah, I play FF XI on my laptop and if I dont do anything special it will overheat and shut off. I usually set it up on a book, with the "hot" side near the vents on the bottom hanging off. Also, I have a circular, wire mesh pencil type cup that I set it on somtimes when I am having a bad overheating night. They also sell little laptop cooling mats with fans in them, but this didnt provide enough cooling for me. Might want to try that, as it is a little easier to play when your computer isnt balanced on top of a cup.

/bump.
thx aleksey for ur input. okay so i'll prop it up with a book and put a gel pack under the hot spot to keep it cool. hopefully that will be enough to keep it going.
one more question tho, is there any way to make the internal fans actually work better? im just worried that even with it propped up and a cooling pack on the hot spot that the hardrive would still melt or get seriously damaged.

Nothing should melt or self destruct...that's what the shut down is for. Like Aleksey says, one of those notebook cooling pads should work wonders for you.
