Will this be a decent card for EQ2?Follow

Hi guys,

I ditched my ATI(too many problems) and am switching to a nVidia for Everquest II. My question to you is this, Can I run it decently on this card...

GeForce FX 5700LE Video Card, 8x AGP, 256MB DDR by BFG

I don't have a ton of money and can get this card for $180 at Comp USA. Is this a good card to have?

My other PC specs are:

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz
RAM: 1024 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM 333MHz
HDD: 200 GB IDE

Will this be ok? I also have a Comcast Broadband connection. Thanks for your help!Smiley: grin

Hello "The One and Only Freak"

Your video card should work fine. The two most important things to consider is if your card is Direct X9 comaptible or better, compliant and wether or not your card has pixel and vertex shaders, which it does. The 5700 card comes in two versions 128mb and 256mb. For the amount of money you are willing to spend, the card you are looking at seems to be a good buy. I would head over to www.newegg.com to compare prices though. Don't let me take credit for all of this info though, there is a great thread on the official sony website on video cards. I recommend reading it in it's entirety, it's about 17 pages long, before committing to your purchase. Here is the link. Good luck and hope to see you in game sometime!

EQ2 will run decently ont hat card with low graphics settings. if you want eq2 to run decently with mid to high settings, you will need a 6800 card. EQ2 is a video resource hog. The 5900 Ultra i have on the parts machine until I can get my pci express 6800 ultra has trouble keeping up even with half the settings off at 1024x768 resolution.

Can I get by with a 6800 with only 128MB or is it only worth it if I get the 256MB card? Also in your opinion, who makes the best nVidia products? I am leaning towards BFG or PNY right now, but they are a little pricey. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: Also I know dick about video cards. Would it be better to stick with AGP 8X or should I look into PCI express?

EDIT2: I can get a XFX GeForce 6800 GT w/ 256 MB with Doom 3 for $428 plus S+H, is this a good deal?

You will probably be ok with 128, but if you can swing it more is ALWAYS better. As far as AGP/PCIx, up to you really. As of now AGP is still widely supported. I have a PCIx in kine, and while I don't notice any difference, I'm sure there is one.

Check out www.pricewatch.com

I just picked up a 6800 GT for $360 through a link found there. I'm sure you can get a better price than rapeusa... er a compusa.

The 128mb card will perform awsome. the 256mb card will perform nearly twice as well. I personally am holding out for the 256mb myself.

BFG cards are overclocked so they run a little faster, but there is always the risk they will burn out faster. PNY cards come with a lifetime warrenty. you burn it out, you get a new card.

personally, i often go with Leadtek Winfast cards or pny cards

There are nearly 0 pci express cards in existance right now. i am waiting for a pci express ultra, 4 months now! they were supposed to be out in !@#$% august!

At the moment, there is no speed differnece between a pci express and an agp 8x card, because neither of the two 6800 cards can use even the full capacity of the 8x slot yet. the pci express slot is twice as fast, but current cards can't utilize that speed. It's more a thing of making sure your system will support newer technologies right now. Plus a pci express card will not fit in an agp8x slot, so you would need a new motherboard, and likely new ram (most pci express boards are using ddr2 memory now)

That's about right for that card. you can probably find a different brand cheaper if you look.

With Doom 3:

Without Doom 3:

I bought mine from this company at 9:00AM on Thursday and it was at my door Friday at 1:00PM.

Granted I live in Michigan and they are in Ohio I believe...but still, prompt servic and cheap prices.

Edit: I went with the card only... Doom 3 don't cost $60 in teh stores. Smiley: wink

consider is if your card is Direct X9 comaptible

It is not the card that is or isn't compatible with DirectX 9. It is the drivers.

Even the Nvidia TNT2 is compatible with DirectX 9 even though DirectX 9 didn't exist when the Nvidia TNT2 was made...
It's just because there are drivers that work with DirectX 9.

No, Directx9 is backwards compatable with a Nvidia TNT card, a TNT card does not support any of the new directx 9.0 specific features that newer cards support.

Totally incorrect. I have the 5700LE works great. I run on balanced setting.. get smooth screen graphics. You dont need to spend 300-400 for a high end card.

Granted the x800 series of cards will run smoother still.. but there not needed if your on a budget and want to play this game.

Just make sure you don't get regular PCI and PCI express slots mixed up. I'm sure the difference between AGP 8X and PCI express cards are very minimal now, but will increase as time and technology advances. If your considering getting a PCI-express over an AGP I would probably wait, especially if you have to upgrade your motherboard. I'm sure in time things will only get faster and cheaper with the PCI-x. Wait it out, unless you really need it now.
