EQOA Port TriggeringFollow

#1 Sep 19 2004 at 1:15 PM Rating: Decent
SOE chat is closed until tomorrow, so maybe someone here can help me. I am playing for like 15-20 minutes straight and then my connection is lost. When this happened with EQ for the PC, I was given the ports to open in order for the connection between my PC and SOE to be uninhibited. If this goes same with this game, for the PS2, what are the correct ports that I need to have open? If I need to do anything else to my router what would that be? It is a Linksys BEFSR41. Thanks for any help in advance.

That's the same router I use, and I didn't have to change anything. It worked right out of the box.

I have already checked that website, and the links for the linksys router don't have anything about everquest port triggering in their support files. What is unusual though, is that they give the ports to open for a certain router (GigaFast) to work when they say all others must consult a rep.

Gonna keep surfing the net, I will post anything here that I find about it in case others have the same problems.

Um, port #'s are port #'s no matter what router you use. EQOA uses a certain range of ports, 10070 and 10071, for use. Open or let the router trigger those ports and you'll be fine.

It is a Linksys BEFSR41. I have read the adobe help file that their site offers but it has nothing to say about how to open ports so that the information transmitted through them isn't inhibited.

Oh yeah, I did get on to the online tech support help and they told me that just putting the cablemodem cat cable to the PS2 directly should solve the problem. He logged off before I could say, "DUH!". The whole point of me using the router is so I can have my other two puters online and my PS2, I guess he just didn't get that.

Okay, finally figured it out by simultaneously being on live help with two reps. I made the mistake of thinking that I had to trigger ports (which is what I did with EQ for the PC), I actually have to foward the ports. Here are all the steps just so others that have the same problem can find a quicker solution than I did.

The following is for configuring the Linksys BEFSR41

-To log into your router, open your internet browser and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.
-Type in your username and password. The default (unchanged) is to leave username blank and then type "admin" as the password.
-You will brought to the default settings page of the router. Depending on the firmware, you have to find your "Fowarding" tab. It should be under the advanced settings menu.
-This will pull up a page with multiple fields that need to be filled. You may write the name of the "Custom App" that you are using the settings for, so no one comes along later and erases it.
-The Ext. port fields is where your numbers must go. The ports needed by the game are 10070 and 10071. So put 10070 in the first column and 10071 in the second, so it makes a 'port range'
-Under the protocol column, check both boxes that correspond with the row you are entering. They are 'Protocol TCP' and 'Protocol UDP'
-Enter the last part of your IP address for your PS2. If you don't know what it is, go back into the setup menu and click the DHCP tab. Under the tab you will see the button, "DHCP Clients Table" and click that. It will pull up a window that contains all of the MAC addresses of the machines connected to the router and the IP address that is given to them. Copy down the one that goes to your PS2. It should not have a name, only because your PS2 doesn't give you the option to name it.
-Click the "Enable" check box to complete the entry and make sure to click the "Apply" or "Save Settings" button or it will wipe all the fields as soon as you leave the page and you will have to enter them again.

That should be it, and now my connection works fine. I hope this helps.
