I understand a normal TV would pretty much suck as a monitor but...

If you have a s-video or DVI input on a TUBE based HDTV compatible, does it look good? An example TV would be http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1077626340538&skuId=6407836&productCategoryId=pcmcat31800050031&type=product

Primarily, I'm speaking of gaming, not word processing or anything like that...

Depends on your card and tv. With a higher end nvidia card and any type of Flat panel (including flat screens and flat panel CRT monitors) you will get pretty good results. Fonts may be a little on the small side for reading, but if it is a game where reading text isn't a big factro, you should have no difficulties. Your tv will often have it's own ideas about Gamma display. SVHS is much prefferable to standard VHS inputs if you can swing it.

i have a fx 5900 currently, and it is hooked into the overhead Toshiba flat panel CRT telivision (i think it's a 25 incher. it's not all that big), i have no problems.

I use an Nvidia FX-5300 and it works well for FFXI on a CRT flatscreen, I had to make text a little larger but damn its nice.
