FFXI - Spontaneous Reboots help?Follow

This has been happening ever since one of the early patches this year. Late January if I'm not mistaken.

This happens at random intervals and I can't seem to lock it down to a single aspect, but I'm guessing it is some form of video confliction. My pc will randomly lock for a few seconds (freeze with an irritating sound glitch) and then reboot itself. This has happened just running through a zone as well as reaching a zone point, screen goes black, Downloading Data displays in the bottom right of the display, and then reboots. No help in the event viewer and there are no conflicts registering in the control panel. Sometimes I can play for a week solid and not have a single reboot, other times it can be as bad as 3 or 4 a night.

Vital PC Specs:

P4 2.4 GHZ
Asus P4P800 with 8x AGP and 800 MHZ FSB
512 PC3200 DDR Kingston RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256MB DDR (8x AGP)

Video card drivers are fully up to date. Motherboard drivers are factory release. This is a fresh OS install with FFXI and a few small programs installed. I have no antivirus or firewall installed on this box. This pc sits behind a router that is shared only by my laptop.

If anyone has any input or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't think it is a virus, but just in case, run housecall.trendmicro.com.

How many case fans do you currently have? Are you overclocking anything (card or the main chip) at all? Do you by chance have another stick of ram you could swap in to see if the ram is the issue?

Are you running in hyperthreading mode?

7 fans in the case, currently. I thought it was a heating issue at first, so I upgraded the box from a single fan to its current state. My CPU temp still seems to hover at 96 no matter how long the box is on. Could it be a heatsink issue?

No overclocking being done anywhere.

I assume hyperthreading is turned on. Where is that defined? Bios?

I have a 256 meg stick I can put in. PC100 Kingston I believe. It is old.

I will run housecall when I get home today and post the results. What should I be looking for?

hmmm, with 7 fans, heat probably isn't the issue. I'd suspect a virus then. When you run housecall, look for viruses.

FFXI does not have any issues with IRQ's that I know of currently, unlike everquest. But it could be worth looking into.

I have the same problems sometimes, no idea why. It just locks up and then reboots my pc. Happens maybe once a week.
