I just hope the designs are actually interesting this time around. I swear to God, if I see a chair Pokemon or something, I'm done.
There was an interesting post on Kotaku about how pokemon design is actually getting much better over time, but nostalgia is keeping people from appreciating that. Like, people are pissed off about Honedge's evolution (two swords), when it's pretty much no different from dugtrio or Magneton.
Also, apparently the change to a lot of the art style, in ways, is because they're making it easier for kids to draw the pokemon, which I can get behind.
But as of right now, none of the designs are too ridiculous.
Hey, remember this post?
Yeah. I'm not sure that's fair.
For one, the Dex listings say that those keys on the ring are actually just keys. Because it has a fascination with them, trainers give Klefki their keys, because they know it won't lose them (like they might). They also specify it's very popular with shopkeepers as a result. And why wouldn't it be - your key is always under armed guard.
And here's the thing; it's a Fairy Pokemon.
A love of keys (and propensity to steal them) is a REALLY old trait of Faeries in Fairy Tales. And if you lump them and elves together, the Shopkeeper part of the story fits right in.

That seems okay to me. Whether or not it's a fairy that took the shape of a key because it was interested in them, or a fairy that took a fascination to keys because they look similar to it, etc., remains to be seen. But I have no problems with the design.
Now, if those keys were a part of it, I might.
On the other hand, if this is actually the final form of the fire starter, I might be willing to accept Fennekin as the best-designed starter to-date. The Froakie final evolution looks badass, too. I don't love Chesnaught yet, but we'll see with time. I'm not sure I understand the squirrel -> sloth evolution they seem to have gone with.
I'm not saying I don't love the originals. I adore them. But I have to admit, they can be just as insane.
Cubone is a pokemon that wears its mother's skull, and evolves so that its mother's skull is fused to it. But that's universal. And while fan theories love thinking it's a Kangaskhan baby that lost its mother, the fact remains that's logically insane in its current state... especially now that we have pokemon breeding, and the mothers come through just fine.
Or how about Farfetch'd? The pokemon that carries its own seasoning around with it? Apparently it can't live without that leek, but it might eat it in an emergency and run off to find a new one? Why can't it live without it? It's not attached, and it's not a grass pokemon?
And it's not like item-based pokemon are new. Voltorb and Electrode are the ones that started that trend. At least now they give the item-based pokemon an honest effort. They don't just make their signature self-destruct and then pretend like it's not an issue that they never die.
