The whole winner takes all thing is just really, really bad for politics. You guys should let the house ad senate seats get divided proportionally so the Tea Party can get all happy and crazy and split off from the GOP and some slightly more sane kind of crazy can take over from this mess.
Edit: and is it just me or is the GOP effectively signing away a shot at the presidency with actions like these that are hugely unpopular nationwide?

Oh it's awful for us right about now. The biggest problem is that the ones in power have the system structured to in a way they've become very good at exploiting. They aren't about to change that without one heck of a fight.
@ Edit: Surprisingly enough I doubt it. At this point the worst thing is Obamacare being very successful, in which case they'll have to spin something else, and it'll be more of an uphill battle. Remember that a significant portion of the country is getting a completely different message thanks to partisan news sources; this is all framed in a very different light there, like "Obama and the Democrats digging their heels in over restrictions to an unpopular health care program while the countries debt spirals out of control." Also, calling it a "slimdown" instead of a "shutdown" makes it sound like the Democrats are playing this thing up into more of a problem than it really is.
