Congrats. Do I get to call you Professor now?

My wife teaches high school chemistry in the NYC school system (in Queens). She's taught at some of the worst schools in the system. She has this ability to freeze a person in their tracks. I'm a grown man who deals with people getting in my face on a daily basis, but she will start with my name, and then slowly but sternly say, in a loud but not LOUD voice, something like, "Michael. I have asked you twice now to please take out the garbage." And I stop in my tracks and get that feeling I used to get when I was a kid and the teacher just caught me doing something I was not supposed to be doing. And then I remember where I am and it passes. And I say, "Yeah, I'm on it." But, damn I hate that feeling.

I never had bad dreams about exams. I was always vaguely surprised by this, as it wasn't that I didn't find exams stressful or anything.

Nah, we don't do exams often enough for that to happen. So far, my exams have been spread out over the years. Here's a list of all the exams I've done in the last six years while studying to become a teacher:

1st year:
"Christian studies, life philosophy, and citizenship" (oral)
"Nature & Technology" (oral)

2nd year:
"Psychology" (written)
"Physics & Chemistry" (oral)

3rd year:
"Pedagogy" (oral)
"Didactics" (written)
"History I" (written)

4th year:
"History II" (oral)
"Bachelor project" (written + oral)

6th year:
"Mathematics" (written + oral)

It's been a long journey, but it hasn't been difficult.

I'm sure it goes well with the Christian studies. For the hymns, of course.

I am now a resident in the Prospect Park area.



I coordinated continuing education programs for Rutgers University, specifically for social workers and addictions counselors. Plus extraneous other duties, like representing my research center (where the continuing ed. unit is based) at national/state conferences, copy editing/proofing/writing, marketing stuff, and managing a professional conference.

Basically, people in addictions counseling, social workers, public health professionals, etc. all have professional licenses in NJ (and NY, and plenty of other states), which need so many hours of education every 2 years (depending on the license) for them to actually KEEP that license. For instance, a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor (LCADC) needs 60 hours every 2 years. A licensed social worker (LSW), on the other hand, only needs 20. I coordinated those trainings, and also had some initial training programs to get licensed.

I don't want to say I hated EVERY second of it... but maybe like 80% of them.

Weird. I actually don't think that I've ever heard those particular words in that particular order before.

I was going to ask you what neighborhood but it's the internet so it's better to keep it general. I don't live there any longer so I can be specific.

I grew up on Degraw Street between 4th and 5th Avenues in Park Slope and I spent quite a few very happy Saturday mornings in Prospect Park with my brother, my cousin, and my uncle. The Brooklyn Zoo is (was?) awesome, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden across the street was too, and the Brooklyn Public Library next door to the Botanic Garden was even awesomer.

So many great memories. Grand Army Plaza was so enormous in the eyes of a 10 year old. Encyclopedia Brown was such engrossing reading. The guy standing at the podium by the front door to the library was dressed in one of those drum major outfits, sans hat, and checked the books you borrowed to make sure they were stamped and I couldn't wait to show him my books. I sometimes buy my daughter a box of Cracker Jacks, but for some strange reason they don't taste anything like the Cracker Jacks I got at the zoo.

And those brownstones. The railroad rooms. The wood trim everywhere. Have much, much enjoyment in your new digs (pun intended).
