The only things worse than lectures are lectures with Powerpoint presentations.

Unless you're awesome and make awesome PowerPoint presentations. Like I do. With vikings. Because vikings!

Edit: Okay, I'll admit the viking was there because it was a history lesson about vikings.

That's like every one of my classes.

The professor who bans laptops uses the logic that it's easy to distract not just the laptop user, but everyone around and behind them. When that person in the front row is on tumblr or something, it can be really easy for half the class to stop paying attention to the lecture.

I'm of the opinion that we're not ******* children, and can stay attentive because these lectures are important to our grades, dammit. And I take so much better notes on my laptop. :|

most people fail at power point because they fail to use it correctly

way too often i would see professors just reading everything on the slide out loud or just treating it as the focal point of the discussion. that is how not to power point

a good power point is there to show main points, charts, pictures or other things that are easier represented visually. they are meant to be secondary to the lecture/presentation not the focal point

I sometimes put "The end..." slides in the middle of a presentation just to mess with the students. Man, the look on their faces... Smiley: smile

One moment they think their suffering is finally over, and then I CRUSH their souls with a delayed "...of Part 1" slide.

I would stab you. I would stab you multiple times. In each organ, alphabetically. I would stab you with bullets.

I only ever had one professor (as an English major) who refused to let us use laptops in a lecture. But it was actually for a history class. That lady was a freaking hard a ss. Every single day before she started lecture she would remind us to put away our cell phones. It is really patronizing.

And I actually like power points, as long as the speaker isn't relying on them to just read off of. Especially with a professor who doesn't allow laptops. Makes it a lot easier to write notes.

We have to run a boring powerpoint before going through the actual physical training. It's a ridiculous amount of red tape and ass-covering for liability and such. I mean, every presentation starts off with a warning about not falling asleep during the presentation to cover for people falling asleep and hitting their heads. Smiley: dubious
