Ironically, I'm not even in the union. Mostly because I've convinced myself that it makes no point to join, because I'll obviously be leaving soon... a lie I've kept up for a year.

But I still pay them some of my paycheck each month, because my contract still falls under the group they negotiate for.

I'm not sure I understand how unions work in the US. You not in a union, but you pay them money every month? Why?

Well, this just pisses me off. Finally got into the WoD beta - spent ages (like, 5 minutes) recreating the looks of my Druid from the Vanilla beta back in 2004, and then my name is taken...

Sigh, I need to come up with a new handle.

All the cool people put random X's and _'s around it so they don't have to pretend they're creative. Smiley: nod

Asian names are my last resort, excluding Japanese ones as those tend to be frequently taken. China, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, find a baby name site and have at it.

I usually go with this list, a god's name just suits me so much better than a random other name.

It's just beta, I wouldn't worry too much about the name. There's even still a chance of another character wipe before launch, so you might even be able to get it still.

The union spends their times negotiating things like policies and benefits, which affect everyone. They can't give union and non-union employees different numbers of vacation days, because it would be discrimination.

So my contract is negotiated by the union regardless of whether or not I join it, so a small amount of my paycheck goes to them automatically.

If I join them, my dues would be 1.2% of my total salary, and I'd gain the ability to vote on union decisions, like who I'd elect to lead the union, who is going to handle the negotiations, etc. For instance, do I care more about vacation times or about tuition remission.

Never really dealt with unions, but we have lobbyists which do pretty much the same thing but on a larger scale.

And you've got politicians yelling about how they need to spend more money on the military, nobody doing that for your regular old office worker.

Rutgers is a massive institution, though.

65,000 students (45,000 undergraduates and 20,000 graduates), over 9,000 staff members (moi), and 15,400 faculty.

^from the website.

So this union essentially covers all of the staff that don't fall into a couple other unions (and the only one I actually KNOW of is the one that covers the IT folks, which I believe is a national union). Certain things, like tuition remission, would be negotiated across the board even then, because IT positions aren't classed differently at the administrative level.

Those aren't our lobbyists. Our guys, who are actually interested in our well being, are about trying to get the VA actually working, and getting us our paychecks every time there's a congressional shut-down.

I prefer slow days over days with lots of appointments and traveling, mostly because of the hurry up and wait of public transport.

I love my job. I'm known as the teacher who never gets mad, so whenever I do get mad, the kids are ******* mortified. That'll teach them to shut the hell up when I'm talking.

Damn this filter, it's making the post look way the hell more profane than it is.

During the school season I generally have three interviews a day, one of which involves driving somewhere to pick people up and interact with people and less formal. Which ultimately means: I get to write off lunch as a business expense.

Due to security issues revolving around today, we don't have anyone scheduled and are just manning the phones which means MRE for lunch.

And yes, I do spend a lot of time thinking with my stomach.

I've been MadLibbing the asterisks with the sillier filtered words. Like hell mortified and shut the fitted up.

Am I right in my guess that MRE is imitation food for soldiers?

I had a teacher like that in high school, art teacher, great teacher and I've only seen him get mad once. He also died of cancer at 50 or so.

Yeah, those. The bigger problem is that they're high calorie high salt high fat content is okay in the field when you're going to burn those almost immediately, they're not so good when you're sitting around most of the day.

And even the better ones taste pretty horrible.

Well, they're meant to be cheap, mass produced and for soldiers that can't exactly get to a Per Se while in the field. They serve their purpose.
