I don't mind alternate timelines as offshoot content. I do mind it when you treat an alternate timeline as a central part of the plot.
For instance, a series of alternate timeline dungeons that are established as alternate timelines that are part of the Bronze Dragonflight attempting to learn more about how the Infinite Dragonflight operates? Fine by me, because the events of the alternate timeline don't matter. They're just trying to learn from it - the time equivalent of running computer simulations.
But traveling to an alternate timeline to bring Cairne back from that timeline to replace the dead one? That's weak. It diminishes the value of the central plot.
And not yet, no. I'll get there, ha.
[EDIT]
And fortunately, I don't care so much anymore. It annoys me, because the Warcraft IP has some awesome assets and the writers just keep making stupid decisions, but I'm so disconnected from the game now that my issue with it is purely from the "Wtf are you doing?" standpoint.
