**** you, you **** *******

Tell me how this filter is even remotely not retarded when used with a text-based communication system. The filtered sentence above is actually a compliment, but because we're hardwired to expect the worst, and because we can't **** read half the sentence, it comes off as an insult. I mean, I'm no psychologist or anything, but I did take an extensive course in how to prevent online miscommunication. Rule #1 was: "Be clear", because the human brain fills in blanks with negative **** Can't really be clear when half the sentence is redacted. As seen above, it can completely alter the reader's interpretation of a message. It's completely retarded, and the Google employees who came up with this **** need a swift kick to the groin.

My brain is hurting from the amount of stupid involved in all this. I need to log off before I get an aneurysm.

Edit: I didn't think anything could top the issue we had with ZAM censoring posts about AdBlock back in the days, but this is some next level *********

What's weird is that it only seems to censor words that aren't right after another censored word. Like so:

******* ****
**** *******

The old filter wasn't great, but it was at least consistent.

I haven't had any words filtered yet, but I think the best approach is to self filter, so at least we can tell what the h*ll people are actually saying.

so sh*t, s*x (apparently) etc

We're not allowed to do that here, though.

H*ll looks ridiculous. Probably because no one ever censors it. Well, no one except us...

And I have yet to find any information online about an official "bad words" list. Everywhere I go, people - including top contributors over on the official Google forums - say that there is no list as the policy is constantly being updated. And every official explanation by Google amounts to this:

Quote:
Google ads may not be placed on pages with explicit text or extreme profanity. Examples include, but are not limited to, pages containing:

  • erotic stories and/or descriptions of sexual acts
  • sexual explicit jokes
  • erotic or sexual forums, bulletin boards, and/or discussion groups
  • sexual or profane terms in the URL
  • crude language and/or excessive amounts profanity

https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/4410771#explicit_text_and_extreme_profanity

Since when is the word 'hell' crude/profane language?

But, seriously, the Adsense restrictions are **** silly. Have you actually looked up the amount of everyday **** they don't allow? It's amazing anyone is actually able to use the service, especially on websites aimed at teens and young adults. Also, this is hilarious:

Quote:
Google ads may not be placed on content that provides tips regarding sexual performance or discusses some treatments of sexual health issues. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • advice about improving sexual performance
  • discussions and/or images of sexually transmitted diseases
  • sexual health advice related to pregnancy, childbirth, or family planning

I mean, is this for real? Is this a real thing? We're actually not allowed to share stories of pregnancy and family planning, because it might contain advice, and advice is bad? I get that it's an attempt to filter out those "Want Baby? Get Pills" spam sites everywhere. I get the feeling that the list used in the new filter here was also intended to be used to combat such spam sites. Does not work on a legit site that focuses on human social interaction. It should be obvious, but apparently not.

Here are more priceless rules:

Quote:
Google ads may not be placed on content that is sexually suggestive and/or intended to cause sexual arousal. Examples of content that may be considered sexually gratifying include, but are not limited to:

  • close-ups of breasts, buttocks, or crotches
  • sheer or see-through clothing or lingerie
  • strategically covered nudity (includes situations in which genitals are blurred out by camera)
  • images of men or women posing and/or undressing in a seductive manner

First off, allow me to thank Google for telling me what I find arousing. Wasn't sure until now. Second, what healthy approach to the human anatomy. They realize kids see naked bodies in like third grade, right? Third, Adsense seems like the exact opposite of any place I'd want to be, and now this website is practicing those same restrictions...

We're not even allowed to post pictures of COVERED NUDITY... I'll let that oxymoron stand there for a bit. In the meantime, can someone tell me what it is? Covered nudity? I mean, I'm a stupid foreigner living in a country that shed these silly dilemmas some forty years ago, so I might be misunderstanding something, but... is it NUDITY if it's COVERED?

This is relevant to my interests, because I'd like to not be nude at work tomorrow. I mean, I wear clothes, but I'm naked underneath those clothes... so I'm nude, right? I mean... how does it work?

Can't we just remove Adsense ads from the forums and call it a day? Put it on the database pages - that should still generate decent revenue. Adsense was CLEARLY not meant to be used with user-generated content. CLEARLY.

At least remove it from Asylum and OoT, there can't be enough traffic to make any difference on those.

I'm guessing it was removed from the Asylum already, which is why bypassing the filter is allowed there.

It's just silly to use a service like Adsense on a website with user-generated content, assuming Adsense is really that content-sensitive. There is no way to effectively police the entire network for content that violates the Adsense policies, so the filter is just delaying the inevitable. But I'm not sure that Adsense is really as restrictive as some are lead to believe. Most of their restrictions seem aimed at preventing spam sites from generating money. Kinda like if Kao made an addendum to the Forum Rules that state that you are not allowed to talk about Indian black magic anywhere on the forums. It would be a legal thing that allowed him to mass-ban certain users, but he wouldn't actually ban us for discussing Indian black magic... I assume. Smiley: um

If I were in charge of all this - which I'm thankfully not - I'd go look up other sites that focus on user-generated content and check out their advertisements. I'd do it fast, because this is not a viable solution.

Fun fact: The word 'hell' was removed from the FCC's list of bleeped words in the 60's.

50 years later...

The policy of bypassing the filter in the Asylum dates to before this kerfuffle with adsense, so my guess is that it's actually probably not ok to bypass the filter in the asylum anymore. I have a feeling they're playing a wait and see if google will care game, but given that they already got flagged, this may not the approach. We'll see.

Yeah, well PG-13 means you can swear like four times, crude humor, implied sexual innuendo, and violence and such. The Expendables 3 is PG-13, while the first two movies were R.

But Adsense does not follow the MPAA rating system. Basically, Google's Policy Team decides if things are family friendly or not, and there is no consistency, because they make up the rules as they go. The only consistent factor I've found is that "profanity" seems to be immediately preceded by "excessive" in the rule sets, but these forums already had filters in place for excessive profanity...

Bottom line is: If you go through the Adsense policies, it's pretty clear that the Adsense service is pointless on pages with user-generated content. It would be impossible for us to keep these forums flowing for a week without violating several of the policies, even with the new oversensitive filter. Pretty much every thread in the Asylum and the OOT is violating one or more policies. If Google cares about the word 'hell', there is no chance in said location that ZAM's Adsense account stays active.

With the current language restrictions, the forums are no longer PG-13. They'd be rated G by the MPAA.

Definitely not gonna renew premium. If it's not going to stop the ********* there's no reason to pay. It was my way of trying to support the site, considering there's no way I'm disabling adblock here, but oh well. I don't particularly care about supporting the site in its current form. I'd miss the community, but the Zam side of things haven't been a big part of my gaming life since Wrath.
