See, if you had just started with that we wouldn't have had to go through all this trouble.

Also I wanted to see who knew what a jointer was. I would not have been surprised if no one did, as they are on the esoteric side of woodworking tools, if incredibly useful.

The one I've been using was used for the Vancouver Olympics athletes village.

The reason I know nothing of woodworking is because I'm clumsy and I like having 10 fingers.

It's super fun, but I recommend having a friend buy all the equipment and set up a shop as it saves space in your place and is cheaper.

I wish I had space in my house. Smiley: frown

Also, on the topic of posts no one will understand, I'm starting to see how people sink 100's of hours into this Mount and Blade game.

Just finished a series of 3-4 big fights and only have about 1/3 of my elite troops left, so I need to go round up some more peasants and train them. Worse still I lost my fief when the local capital got taken over, so that's a serious hit to my income. We took the capital back like 2 days later, but since it's considered a "newly conquered territory" the King has to divvy up the land anew which will take a few weeks of game time. Sucky that I lost 1/2 my troops defending the little village only to have someone else not pull their weight. Smiley: mad

I don't have much influence yet so the chances of me getting any new land isn't that great; if I do it'll probably be some other worthless hamlet I'll have to improve again. In the meantime I'm getting requests to go on another crazy campaign. Think I'm just going AWOL on them though (the consequences are pretty minimal for that anyway). Go back, get those peasants recruited, and start chasing bandits around to get them some experience. Hopefully by the time I get them useful I'll have a new little village providing income. Failing that I need to spend more time playing politics, or at least get married into one of these families in my faction so I can have a chance to get something worthwhile from all this war stuff they're obsessed with.

Yay for "one step forward, two steps back." Smiley: glare

Edit: Also yay people coming into my office, it took 45 minutes to type that post. Smiley: lol

Is it really a big problem, getting boards that aren't square? Or is this just more to do with the projects you're working on?

Edit: wood warps so if you get untreated lumber (I think) stuff isn't going to be perfectly square.

My dad has a woodworking shop with all the big *** equipment like this and this. Probably different brands and such but the same colour and similar looks, it's hard to tell underneath all the dust in that place. Smiley: lol

Rough sawn lumber is by definition not square. You can buy squared lumber, it just means someone else has already done that work, which means you need to pay for that time. But no, wood doesn't come off the tree with two flat surfaces that are square.

There's potential here methinks, just need to figure out how to grow square trees. Smiley: nod

@aethien, it's not so much untreated as unaged.

The process is you cut up lumber, let it age, and then surface and square it. I can get lumber at any point along this process, the earlier I get it the cheaper it is, but the more work I have to do. Fortunately I find it fun, so it's worth it.

Treated lumber is used for outside work, and it's resistant to moisture damage, but that's a different area. You don't need to worry about square with things like 2x4's or outdoor construction, you need to worry about it for detailed interior work, and furniture building. Finish carpentry uses this.

Pretty much. I'm surprised having that accessible that you never got interested in woodworking, it's super fun.

I prefer designing stuff, actually making the things is better left to someone with any sort of skill in that area. Also did I mention how I like having 10 fingers?

I took a semester in woodworking in high school.

That sentence is literally all I can add to this topic.

So some parts of the Netherlands got 1.5 months worth of rain in a few hours today.

Manitoba's been like that lately, just a stupid amount of rain. Thankfully that seems to have stopped now.

For the Netherlands though, I'd just say you're returning to your proper state.

Still no rain here. Not a single drop in like two weeks. I'm not built for this! My genes are made for cold, rainy weather, not this tropical night *********

I concur. Hot and humid is best reserved for other places. I'll take a month without seeing the sun over a month of uncomfortable nights.

Agree, unless it's actually freezing because then the cold is awesome.

I will say being a degree or two above freezing with stuff falling from the sky is my least favorite thing in the world.

10C-ish and cloudy is the best weather for doing anything outside though. It's warm enough you don't feel cold after being outside for a while, but not so warm you work up a sweat when doing stuff. No sun means the pasty-white skin doesn't get burnt. A bit of mist or drizzle keeps the bugs from flying around and the riff raff inside.
