Salary here still means paid overtime unless you do a job where overtime is expected. It kind of depends on what sort of job you do as it's negotiated between workers and employers unions but in general your boss can't tell you to work longer or on a weekend without paying you for the extra hours and usually 1.5x normal rate for evenings and weekends, 2x for weekend evenings, unless that is normal for your work (barman or something like that).
You people with your fair laws and such... Smiley: disappointed

I'm guessing it's one of those jobs that makes it especially hard to take time off. You know making it difficult to get the vacation approved, doubling your workload in the days leading up to the vacation, pestering you while you're away, and punishing you by keeping you out of the loop when you return. There's places around here that'll make a vacation worse than normal work. Smiley: frown

That seems like suicidal behaviour for a company to me, employees having vacation time is a good thing for companies and actively making your employees miserable is a recipe for bad results and employees that aren't loyal towards the company nor happy to work there.

Oh it's absolutely self-destructive.

The whole "I can't take time off and still get my work done so I'm going to make your life miserable if you try and take time off" thing isn't a sign of a healthy company. It's not uncommon though, and still typical for entry jobs and places where the skill hurdle is low. If it takes all of 2 hours to train a replacement (and 1 hour of that is the mandatory 'no discrimination' video) they don't care if you leave. They'll juice for all you can take and then replace you once you're worn down.

They talk about 80-100 hour weeks in the banking sector. 60 hour work weeks aren't uncommon in many places, and heaven help you if you're in one of those industries where that time is unpaid. I remember 60-hour weeks and 19-hour days myself (thankfully I got overtime at least). It's like some kind of adult world hazing thing.

Anything else is communism. Smiley: rolleyes

Don't kid yourself, the last thing I do before lights out is pop six Ibuprofen 200mg tabs. Keeps all the parts from creaking.

I don't get overtime when I put it in normally. I'm supposed to, but it doesn't happen. My standard workweek is actually scheduled for more hours than I'm salaried for.

For this event, I'll be getting extra hours. I don't know if I'll get all of them, and I don't know if I'll get time and a half. But I will get some.

My boss will probably try and pay out with comp time instead. I haven't decided how worthwhile fighting that is. Because, on the one hand, @#%^ that, pay me. On the other hand, I'm hoping to leave soon, and comp time will get paid out. And if I don't leave, it's extra vacation time.

On the third hand, I've been here a year and a half and I haven't taken a single vacation. So.
I feel guilty now that I forgot to have that talk with you. The one about working long hours, being the best you can be, going above and beyond, doing all of your job and more, all for the ultimate reward - being taken advantage of and abused by your boss! Yes! You're living the American Dream now digg!!

I'm really sorry.

But don't worry, soon you'll be a short, wrinkly, crotchety old f'ck, sour about life, with little to live for, and you can then take great satisfaction in yelling at all the kids in the neighborhood to stay the f'ck off the g-damn lawn! Smiley: motz

I'm back after a full week's vacation in Sweden.

Did anyone post anything about me while I was gone? If not: what the hell, man?

How was Sweden?

And if you want people to talk about you you have to let them know you're gone.

Was weekend. Weekend posting is tough. Little kids don't like to be ignored. Did manage it pretty well though, between the world cup and spending $8 on that mount and blade game that was 75% off on steam.

If it helps I was thinking at the end of last week that I hadn't seen you post in a while.

It generally requires becoming surly enough that people leave you alone for a bit, no one likes grumpy dad. That plus a movie can usually buy some small bit of peace.

Just do like every other responsible parent and buy your kids a tablet. Throw your Apple ID or Google Play ID in there for increased effect.

Gone are the days of just shoving the kid outside and telling them you'll call when dinner's ready.

Technically not a satellite, but interesting nonetheless. Even if Pluto isn't a planet anymore.

Sattelites circle around a planet, not necessarily man made either, just all the rubbish that's flying circles around earth.

Not just 'moons' Smiley: oyvey

Also a dwarf planet, and quite likely other kuiper belt object(s), if everything gets planned out in time. Then the poor little hunk of metal disappears into deep space forever.
