Shouldn't be a problem for them. Australia didn't exactly look sharp. I'm just looking forward to Germany/Portugal today. [:popcorn;]

Oh right, and we play too... Smiley: rolleyes

I'm cheering for the dutch this year, so hopefully they do well.

Aethien seems to be down on them, but my impression was that they had a really solid team this year. I don't follow soccer thoroughly enough to really have any opinion on the matter though.

We have a pretty weak team compared to other tournaments, plenty of young talent but especially the defense is young and inexperienced at this level of play. Defending against guys like Pele or Finnbogason in the Dutch league is a world away from defending against players like Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Balotelli etc.
Add to that that of our 2 defensive midfielders who do have experience at that level one of them (Strootman) is injured and not at the world cup which leaves precious few players with experience at the highest level of play that exceeds about 10 matches.

The Dutch team also performed historically badly 2 years ago at the European Championship and in a group with the world champion and Chile (ranked 1 higher on the world ranking than the Netherlands) confidence in the team was pretty low.

4-0 Germany, it was pretty much a one-sided thingy. Smiley: frown

Though I suppose if Portugal decides not to show up it helps us, so silver-lining I guess. Smiley: rolleyes

Drama, crazy dude thinking he's in a streetfight, Germany playing brilliantly and Ronaldo making comic faces. The game had plenty of entertainment.

I'll have to look up some of the pictures. Radio and live updates don't show that well...

I like how the clock is running in real time and his face is in slow-motion. It makes it look like it's his normal speed. That pleases me.

I think being manager for the Russians is even better than being an athlete. Supposedly the guy gets a salary of €8,300,000 per year (so $10.5 million-ish)

I've never wanted to hit someone with a baseball bat so much in my life, but at the same time I'm a little cautious as he might be spetsnaz.

You can never go wrong hitting someone with a baseball bat. It's like foolproof or something.

I see the Dutch women got revenge for our Aussie men winning the hockey. It is actually a bit surprising we do so well in the hockey as it is way down the list for participation rates and gets very little media attention other than during Olympics or World Cups.

Other way 'round. But both are kinda sorta revenge for 16 years ago when the world cup was in Utrecht and the Dutch men beat Australia 3-2 after being down 0-2 with 10 minutes to go and the Australian women beating the Dutch women.

I was there as a 10 year old, it was awesome.

Also, with football taken into account we're leading 2-1 Smiley: wink

actual list of how much managers are paid (per year) at the world cup.

And that with England being on the brink of elimination and Russia starting poorly with a draw against south Korea. Not very good value for money those two, especially when you consider that Hodgson has been a manager for 43 years with many teams of repute and has never managed to win a prize, not a single one.

I guess if it's a major avenue of cash for the country it's okay. I don't think sports are particularly good to spur on tourism. Bragging rights sure as hell aren't a good enough reason.

The only people making money from this are TV, FIFA and the people participating.

Edit: and corrupt politicians of course.

Once in a while I try to figure it out, my brain hurts, and I stop again.

At least Italy plays today.

******* online clothing shops.

"Your order has been delayed."
"Your order was delayed because we sent it to the wrong ******* part of the country."
"The order is on its way back here now."
"By the way, we can't send it to the right address once it gets here, because **** it."
"Oh, and now the item you ordered is sold out."

Dammit, now I have to go out and interact with other human beings to get my shirt. Smiley: mad
