It's only a good thing if it's happening to someone else.

It was a decent pizza, probably not up to your standards but with the limited choices I have it's good enough.

Pretty good, not spectacular. But it's also pretty cheap so there's that.

Yay we had a power bump. 2 seconds with the power off means we get to spend the afternoon recovering from it. Smiley: glare

I like how in my office if the internet goes down, all of a sudden everyone is wandering the halls with a bewildered look on their face.

How does 2 seconds of no power affect your afternoon?

Edit: wait, at your work of course...

Who are these people? Do I know them? Are they my co-workers? Have I ever talked to them before? I have no idea...

Ayup, instruments go down, not everything has UPS backup, all kinds of bad stuff like that. Thankfully it doesn't look like we lost any samples this time. It'll take some time for the one instrument to pull vacuum again, had to restart a database search, but we were pretty lucky overall.

Nevermind, looks like we may have lost an ion gauge on one of the mass spectrometers. Smiley: glare

A mass spectrometer is a machine that can tell you what substances make up whatever sample you put into it. Put in a (properly prepared) sample, get out a list of all the substances in it. Basically. An ion gauge is just a part of it.

I actually think these movies could be pretty cool. The article you linked complains that they're making a 54 page book into three films, but the book isn't even a traditional book. It has no plot, it's just a bestiary of mythical creatures. Each page is an entry in a textbook, with annotations by Harry and Ron (which are actually pretty funny). There's no plot to drag out over three movies like the Hobbit is doing, they're not going off of a prewritten source like the original Harry Potter movies were. They're making all new movies set in the same universe with a new plot following new characters. JKR also has a large amount of creative control.

All in all, I'm excited. I don't really see this as being a particularly egregious example of money-whoring, I think it has some great potential.

I agree with what you're saying except why make it 3 movies? One I would have been all for but three gets into the milking it for all it's worth and then some territory.
#5746 May 22 2014 at 11:46 PM Rating: Good
Maybe the story they want to tell is best split up over three movies? I dunno, I'm not going to pass judgement on that until I actually see it.

The Hobbit I don't think should have been three movies. The story was too short, it requires serious padding out to make three movies work. That's an example I would consider moneywhoring. But, say, the original Star Wars trilogy was great for being spread across three movies. It was a story best told in that format.

I don't think we'll know which case this trilogy will fall under until we see it.

It reeks of moneywhoring to me, I'm not saying it is but it definitely feels like one of the first things they did was decide just how many movies they could make.
