I'd suggest flowers and a home cooked meal.
I could deal with any number of kids if they were my own. It's other peoples' kids I can't stand.
I'm just going to play it safe and never break into that territory.
Particularly not when having kids means spending more time around other peoples' kids.

Also, it's my mother's birthday this month, and I don't have the slightest clue what to get her. I'm trying not to do this last-minute, but that doesn't work if I can't think of anything she'd want/use.
Anything consumable is good, if she likes a good tea or coffee or fancy chocolate or wine or whatever that's great. Alternatively take her out for a day to do something you both enjoy (theater or something?).
Always good and they work for the person who already has everything they want.[/quote]
Getting her to actually
go out for those gifts is the problem. My sister is constantly trying to do day trips, weekends, etc. with my mom as gifts, but it's an eternal case of never being a good time.
My dad does most of the cooking in the house, and he's a much better chef than I am, so the home-cooked thing tends to fall flat. I sent her lilies for mothers day (Lilly was my grandmother's name, and one of my mom's favorite flowers). So flowers now fall a little flat.
My dad bought her a tablet, so an e-reader is out.
Everyone has been defaulting to activities she can do with my niece. But I feel like she deserves to get presents that are actually for her. I know she enjoys doing them with her granddaughter, but I feel like she deserves to pamper herself, too.
