I'm quite aware that while I appreciate something that looks nice, and am striving towards a nice coordinated house now that I'm moving, I'm very much function over form.

Sometimes the form is the function mind you, I'll do things to create a certain atmosphere, but the purpose is what drives it.

A good design should combine both. It's why the Eames lounge chair is still so desirable, it looks phenomenally good and it's comfortable.

I don't think that the function or form is $4000 more than a very nice lazy boy.

The Lazy boy will be worthless in 3 years, the Eames chair will still be worth that $4000 in 30 years (assuming you take good care of it).

Also, googling lazy boy: the form is worth the $4000 more. Holy **** are those Lazy Boy chairs hideous monstrosities, just vile.

I don't have enough money to be posh, but it's a dream of mine to own an original Eames lounge chair one day, to me it's as close to the perfect lounge chair as anyone will ever get. There are no visible bolts or screws, the construction is beautifully simple and the use of rubber pads between the aluminium and plywood give the chair some flexibility which was revolutionary at the time (we're talking 1956 here). Yet despite the fact that it's almost 60 years old it still looks modern.

Okay, I will grant that's a nice looking chair. The retro is JUST campy enough that it's actually quite chic.

Still, while there are plenty of $4k chairs I might want, I doubt I'll ever buy one. The same as I absolutely WANT a $2k gaming pc, but I'm not gonna purchase one (particularly as I do nothing for work I couldn't do on a $500 laptop, including light photoshop usage).

"If I were rich" is only a fun game if you limit the possibilities to purely theoretical. Once the line blurs into "well, maybe I could have that," it becomes much less fun.

They're actually more like $9000 over here, I'm still going to buy one if I ever can. It's a sh*tload of money but it's also one of the most iconic pieces of furniture ever made.

Edit: in the classic stained wood and black leather configuration of course. It doesn't look camp at all like that, the brown leather one was just the first I saw that shows the construction from the back.

I see nothing has changed in 35 years. (It hasn't been that long since I've been to a gym, that's around when I first did though)

That's nonsense, but ok.

I've seen some very nice lazyboys in the past, but I didn't see any in the website at first glance.

It's really not, the Eames chair is so well known and such an icon of design that second hand ones are not much cheaper than new (if they're in good condition anyway) and some older models are worth considerably more than new ones because they use rare wood. The more iconic designer furniture just holds it's value very well. Mies Van Der Rohe's Barcelona Chair, Martin Visser's sleeping couch for Gispen, Irving Harper's Marshmallow sofa etc. all still sell for a lot second hand because people have never stopped wanting them.

The Lazy boy chairs all look, for lack of a better word, obese. With examples like this leading the pack with a look like a fat guy wrapped in fake leather. It's honest to god one of the most depressing things I have ever seen.

yeah, I have to say, I couldn't find any lazy boys on the website that I liked the look of at all. I know I've seen some, but apparently they went from tastefully soft to OMG fat mode.

I wouldn't buy an ugly couch or chair, but I could never justify spending as much as the designer chair costs.

Well, you can get a similar Eames chair (non-vintage) for like $900 here. More than I want to spend on a single chair, because I don't make $100k/year, but not nearly as bad as $4k... or $9k.

I would because things like that bring me a lot of joy. I've been looking for Martin Visser's BR 02 sofa for a while now but even in dreadful condition they still sell for over $500, recently renovated and they're around $2500 when a new one is between $3-4000. Again a design that's been for sale continuously since the late 50's so it's not like there's very few of them left or anything.

My point being that while they cost a lot, you can always sell them for quite a significant portion of their new value.

It's also got fake leather and the wrong feet and I personally wouldn't want to live with knowing I have an imitation one even if it's significantly cheaper.

Edit edit: Yes I know I'm an elitist **** about this, probably more so than about anything else. I ******* love design Smiley: inlove

If I'm buying a chair, I'm not planning on reselling it, so the resale value is really a low value feature.

If I spend money on something I need to evaluate how much I'm paying, what I'm gaining vs something cheaper and what I could get with that money.

I assert that you're not going to be gaining much over $1000 for a chair like this. If you spend $1000 you can get a very nice looking comfortable chair. With the extra $3500 I could buy a super nice bike, or two new very nice stoves, etc. I would have to have so much money in order for something like this to be justified. (I'm pretending for the argument that this is the pinnacle of what I would like in a chair in my room)

Even if you go to $2000 for a cheaper chair, you still have a huge gap. If order for me to pay money I have to be convinced that my money is buying something real. I appreciate good design, but how is this not just setting up a brand and then ripping you off?
