In England, Starbucks is mostly a London thing. Most other towns either have Costa (which is marginally better) or proper coffee places.
I once spent a weekend in Cambridge just kind of going from independent coffee shop to independent coffee shop. Fun times.
I've heard good stuff about Australia with this stuff, too.
Edit: but Scotland is dreadful. We can either have canteen coffee, or Starbucks, or the stuff from the vending machines. There's some coffee somewhere in the biology building but I've not looked into it. And the canteen is really far away.
There is also a library coffee shop but the library is even farther and it genuinely seems to be really bad.
