looks alot prettier colored coordinated in my wordpad doc lol just thought i'd share this with pallys who are trying to take the first step to gearing for raids, as similar posts on EJ and whatnot tend to list the BESTEST gear in all their list, so this is the "not quite bestest list" of easy to get beginner gear for this patch

any comments welcome, plz not this is my first ever post of this type so dont be too critical :)

If you link to the wowhead item, zam will use a mouseover popup:

Annihilan Helm

I usually just build a list right on wowhead. It's not quite as clean as yours though.

So a pally gear list with no explanation of how to achieve CTC with said list.

If you want to make a solid pally list you do realize that talking about CTC is necessary at this stage of gearing, right?

It is, at least, a compilation of the tanking gear available in the new 5-mans, with JP/VP items identified when drops are unavailable. It's worth adding that in addition to the Tier 12 Chest, Legs, and Gloves available for JP, there are drops available for all three slots.

Not when doing a list of drops, Horse. You're thinking guides here, which this isn't. For guides, people go to ElitistJerks anyway. This is just a list of stuff you can get from the new heroics and vendors.

There's no reason to talk CTC unless you make a guide about raiding.

Combat Table Coverage. Basically, it's having enough combined Dodge, Parry, Shield Block chance, and innate miss chance so that your character never takes a full-strength melee hit.

For raid-level bosses (Skull level or 3 levels higher than your character), you need a total of 102.4%, counting the 5% miss chance everyone (including raid bosses) has. Or, looking at it another way, your combined Dodge, Parry, and Shield block chance needs to be 97.4%.

For dodge and parry, it takes more rating for each extra % of dodge. These numbers are made up, but for example, it might take 150 rating to go from 5 to 6% dodge chance, and 300 rating to go from 15 to 16% dodge. Mastery stays constant, so it is beneficial at some point to reforge dodge/parry to mastery to reach full CTC.

Once paladins get to that point, the reverse is true. Shield blocks negate 30/50% of a melee hit, while dodge and parry negate 100%. If you're over the CTC cap, reforge master back into other avoidance stats to get more effective avoidance.

Warriors get Critical Block chance if they go over the CTC cap, so it may be beneficial for them to keep stacking Mastery. I don't tank on my warrior, so I haven't really looked into it.

Basically, just reforge everything to mastery and keep dodge and parry within one percentage point of each other. That should get you up there close enough.

My Warrior or Paladin has a macro for checking the CTC rating in-game. I'll post it here for those interested:

/run DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 102.4 combat table coverage. Currently at: "..string.format("%.2f", GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance()+GetParryChance() +5))

Copy the entire thing into your chat and press Enter, or create a macro for easier use.

Note: If you're a Warrior, don't use Shield Block before using this or the CTC value will be way off (due to Shield Block giving an additional 25%). Same goes for trinkets with dodge/parry procs.
