My roommate dinged 85 the other day and has found himself struggling with healing. Not only that, but he's been searching online and can't seem to find a guide that doesn't contradict itself or spark an argument about stats, healing techniques and whatnot. So, I have to ask, are there any guides about the subject folks here use?

And if not, could you share with me a little insight on stat priorities? Only thing he's found that most seem to agree on is that Intellect is most important and all gear should have spirit, though you might reforge some of that spirit. Beyond that, different posts have argued in favor of haste, crit and mastery as being the best. Also, how do you find yourself healing, for the most part?

Thanks in advance for your time and any help you can offer.

Honestly, with disc it really depends on your style. The two main styles with disc are smite/atonement healing (raid healing), and mitigating damage with shields (tank healing).

For shields, mastery is king. You won't actually be using as many normal heals, so haste isn't quite that important. Crit is pretty much pointless AFAIK. For smite healing though, a roughly equal balance of all three is best.

For shield healing with rotation, you are obviously going to be using your shield primarily, then tossing in some greater heals and prayer of healing for when you need to heal the whole party. For smite healing, keep holy fire up on the target at all times, and spam smite while using shields and the occasional greater heal and prayer of healing.

Now keep in mind, this is the basics. These tactics would work fine for a heroic. I am not in any condition to be giving healing advice for raiding lol.

You can gear for Int beyond gems and enchants so just follow the rule of higher iLvl is better, it works 9 times out of 10.

Get enough Spirit ASAP, I find it is around 2k if you are doing content appropriate for your gear.

Mastery was king when PW:S spam was the all the rage. Then PW:S's duration got changed so the shields weren't always popped on non-tank targets greatly reducing their value. That plus the 200% Crit heal buff has made mastery a so-so stat.

Crit is now a lot sexier as we have fairly higher Crit rates via Renewed Hope. Plus Crit does still make the DA bubbles which are nice

Haste has been a strong stat for disc in Cata for a while now. Mainly due to PoH spam being so powerful. Also gets slow GHs out faster and more Smites during down time.

Personally as a Smite spec'd Disc healer, I am pushing Crit and Haste with an emphasis on Haste. I have more Spirit than I want but don't have the gear to wiggle it lower.

Anyway, I can't really say more with out seeing a spec. But mentioning Penance and ProM on CD never hurts. Also to never bother with Heal as IF + ToT make GH just as efficient. Getting Inglesia's Rapture proc tracker is also a huge boost to mana efficiency via Rapture procs.

I am with Horse. I actually am finding that Mastery is meh for my atonement Disc Priest. It isn't that bigger shields are bad, it is just that getting Greater Heals out faster with a higher chance to crit seems to be better.

Definitely trust Horse's advice over mine. IIRC, his priest is actually main specced for healing where as mine is not.

Pretty much this but with PoH as well as GH.

I passed this on to my roommate over the weekend, and he seems to be doing a bit better. More comfortable in regulars, at least. Thanks for the help, folks.

Poldy, the one other thing I would throw in, and it really is not a make or break bit, is that if you want to top someone off and you have the Mana for it, use Renew. The nice thing about Renew is that even if they take damage later, you are still healing them. This makes you a bit more efficient. Now let's say you are on the last scoops of your Mana you obviously need to use something more efficient.

I'm in total agreement with keeping things balanced. In my mind, disc is about using all your spells, at the right time. A smite rotation is great and conserves mana, but you will need to break out your other spells when needed. Pumping out max HPS may be effective, but without utilizing more mana friendly abilities, you're gonna find yourself oom with only "heal" available to keep your tank alive.

That's what makes disc so fun.
