This is probably a stupid question, but I am coming back to WoW after a looooong break and want to be sure of myself. I am about to start a new Shaman, and I am wondering if I will be able to solo to 85 on Enhancement? I've seen a lot of advice to go with the caster spec instead, but I enjoy Enhancement more. But if there's a huge detriment to leveling, I'll rethink my spec.

Actually, I found it to be quite opposite. When I was leveling my Shaman, it was much easier to level as Enhancement rather than Elemental for me. I was burning through mobs left and right without much trouble at all. I didn't even start trying Resto or Elemental until I hit 79-80 (back in WotLK days).

You shouldn't have any problem leveling as Enhancement.

Enhancement is a fine spec to level with. You will actually find it easier to obtain gear for that spec, as many leather pieces are shared with Rogues and Hunters. Thus you can get Stam and Agility. Also once you hit Mail, you will go for Hunter items that have Agility and Stam as well. So Enhancement is actually a great way to level.

I recently leveled my goblin shaman and experienced far better XP/hour as enhancement than elemental. With most quest mobs I didn't bother with totems (why waste a GCD?) and still cleaved through the content. And when you get Maelstrom Weapon you just tear up quests with zero downtime. The trick with enhancement is that you don't stop moving really. Earth Shock on the run up to a mob, Stormstrike/Lava Lash, loot and start running again. Whereas elemental required stopping and watching cast times in more of a caster-nuke style.

Of course, the nature of quests has changed so that there are far fewer multi-mob pulls where I could certainly see elemental being more efficient for killing off groups.

Both are interesting and can be fun. But the speed at which enhancement levels now is shockingly fast. Quite possibly the fastest spec of any toon I've ever leveled with.
