Seeing as it's been quiet for some times, I figured I'd put up a link to a somewhat important article. I myself have been rather uncertain as to what's gonna happen with the next patch, and how much of Cata's intended healing system will apply in end-wrath.

WoWInsider's Spiritual Guidance priest section has a nice column up about what will change soon, and what will wait 'till Cataclysm.

In a nutshell;
-Mana regeneration will stay the same
-Healing as it is now will more or less stay intact
-No need to use Heal, yet
-We'll get our new abilities and with that an opportunity to learn how to use them: Power Word: Barrier, Chakra and all its subspells and Smite+Attonement/Archangel will be in play

This keeps our cookie cutters fairly predictable - we still, for now, avoid all +mana talents and spec completely for throughput. Disc will simply get an additional cooldown as well as the Smite trick if they feel like playing around with that, and Holy will get its Chakra.

Long story short: do not worry about Heal yet, spec as you would in WOTLK, and stick to your original game plan - use additional tactics when you feel safe enough to get into them.

Wow. I'm really looking forward to trying this.

Archangel
Quote:
The mana you restore is quite significant -- about 10k after you subtract the cost of Smite, which is more than the 4k you'd get from a mana pot and quite comparable to the 20k you'd get from using Hymn of Hope and Shadowfiend at the same time. The big difference is you can use Archangel every 30 seconds.

Also, we are all thinking about our builds, so show us what you have come up with. I need more points!! But, lacking that, I'm thinking of:

http://wowtal.com/#k=B18TqVxIj.a5o.priest.-ubBwq

for fun, if it wasn't for being outcast and ridiculed, I'd try
http://wowtal.com/#k=B18TqVjNa.a5o.priest.-ubBwq

I'll be working on my Vuhdo config to incorporate smite and Archangel. I already show the tank's target, so I'll be binding smite and Archangel to mouseclicks for hostile targets. It will be fun to see what type of rotation we can get going.

Because of some stuff the article cleared up, my talent tree choices have been made fairly obvious:

This for disc - if you do not need Heal yet you can skip SoS entirely. You could go for Imp. Renew and Empowered Healing in the holy tree if you so desired, but I want to play with Smite/Archangel a bit. As for glyphs, there aren't really any better choices than these. There's some optional changes like Flash Heal instead of Barrier or Pain Suppression instead of Holy Nova, but that really shouldn't matter a lot - definitely not in IcC.

Holy would probably look something like this - you've got the luxury of not really having to spec into a subspec, so you can dump almost all excess points in holy. If you're not much of a Renew player, you can drop points/the glyph and fill out Test of Faith.

As it is now, the trees actually kind of rock - they're basically where they're gonna be at in Cataclysm, with the exception that because this is still WOTLK we can skip ALL mana regeneration talents and basically go full throughput.

Did anybody see the button on Wowtal that says "Use it ingame", as shown on mmo-champion, so that you can get a run command to automatically spec your character?

This is how I will be speccing tonight. Or whenever I can actually get in.

- I plan on using this build for everything. In my case that means soloing, PVP, and 5-mans mainly.

- I'm just using the one to get used to my new toys, but I do have dual spec, so if I need more healing power, or to sub into a raid or something, I'll add a more practical build for those activities.

- Only put three points in Holy because I can't get SoL until level 81. :(

- Yes, I took Heal talents! I know I don't need to use Heal yet and it doesn't work the way it will at 85. But never having been on the PTR or the beta, this is my chance to learn the new dynamics, so I want to check it out.

This is what I'll be raiding with tonight. I'll miss Glyph of Dispersion, but I'll learn to live without. I guess I'll just have to actually get the spores on Festergut now. Or Rotface. I'm not sure which one does it.

As for a healing off spec, I think I'll be dropping for a bit in favor of this Holy spec. I really wanted to try Holy and never got the chance.

Plus, now that I'll be dropping any and all hit I can off my gear, my gear is a lot more Holy friendly.

No Borrowed Time, Teacake? Wow. You really, really want to Heal.

I’m jumping in the deep end, going from dual Discipline (PVP/PVE) builds to Holy PVP/Shadow PVP builds. Whatever PVE I do should be simple enough even with a suboptimal build.

I skipped mana talents such as Masochism because by all reports mana will not be an issue at 80, and I needed the points for Shadow PVP talents. I thought long and hard about what to skip to get Holy PVP talents, and reluctantly settled on Revalations and the Chakra-extending talent State of Mind. As much as I want to play with the new toys, I don’t see myself using any Chakra but Smite in PVP, since I plan to Chastise every 17.5 seconds.

Edited to add: Teacake, if you aren’t hit capped off your gear, you might want to swap in the Glyph of Smiting, which will let you nail even raid bosses and artic wind mages. If you are hit capped off your gear...you might want to reforge a lot of that hit into haste or crit or mastery, and swap in the Glyph of Smiting.

I've got the Divine Accuracy glyph in there, which increases my chances to hit with Smite by 18%. Are you talking about something different, or was Glyph of Smiting an old name for it? Because I reckon that's got me set.

I'm going to play around with the no Borrowed Time spec for a bit. I don't like it in my 85 build so I want to see how much I really notice the difference. I know haste is very big among progressors right now, but I rely on it very little as a general rule and I think it's going to be even less important to me in Cata.

My mana is over 41k now.

Apparently, ArchAngel means I could quest as disc and never ever need to drink.

My bad, got your spec confused with another I was scoping out.

I was OoM from changing specs, some mana came back. Smite spam, Penance and ArchAngel started filling me back up.

Have to fix UI before I can heal but hoping to do it tonight.

I'm actually considering a BT-less spec myself. I never cared for haste, and now that the talent is nerfed to only give me a marginally noticeable amount of haste, I might actually be able to do with out it. Especially in Cata when haste is even more redundant.

Holy Nova batman. Spam it a couple times by a mailbox and you will see Devine Aegis bubbles popping up on random friendly targets not in your group.

And what's this, no Abolish Disease Smiley: confused
I know, cure disease, but Abolish ticked more than once.

It's part of their new healing paradigm. They want dispelling to be more difficult and a conscious choice, and in that vein of thought have removed all auto-dispell abilities like Abolish Disease, Abolish Poison, and Cleansing Totem.

I managed to get a lot of battlegrounds in on Wednesday. Nearly all were WSG, with just a handful of AB. Disconnections at the start of the game were a problem for many people; I routinely saw one or two people on each side frozen in their starting area. I only DC’d once myself.

Winning games was ridiculously easy. Most people were focused on trying out their new builds in combat, not on the objectives, so running the flag was as simple as taking a wide detour around the midfield meatgrinder.

I tried out both my new Shadow PVP and Holy PVE specs. Shadow is brutally powerful. Even knowing little about the playstyle, I felt confident about engaging every force on the field. Hasted, critting DoTs tore players apart in every direction, and fear/silence/horror/disarm gave me plenty of options against different classes, and slipping out of LoS to flash heal myself or Divine Hymn worked beautifully. As long as I remembered to DPS (and not, for example, forget that I couldn’t penance people), I did very well.

Holy was harder to judge. Certainly I fell in love with Body and Soul, and Holy Word: Chastise is everything I hoped. Circle of Healing is nearly imbalanced when its mana cost is so trivial, and Guardian Spirit is a vast improvement over Pain Supression, though I miss the glypphed cast-while-stunned. I also miss Penance. I can’t tell for sure if I can no longer tank whole crowds due to environmental changes or due to the switch from Disc to Holy. I might have to swap to see, but I’ll give Holy a few more weeks yet.
