questions from a newer priestFollow

#1 Sep 05 2010 at 10:57 PM Rating: Decent
So very recently I've actually started to hit end game things (Icc) and had a couple of quick questions.

Over all I am fairly competent with both DPS and healing in instances that are not raid based. I was over all wondering how I can become more useful though as a whole to raids.

Though I do prefer my Shadow spec, I also have Holy. Gear wise I think I'm ok, though I know I do need to upgrade several of my gems. My main question is on rotations for shadow, and general keys for improvement I guess.

Here is the link for if people have suggestions on how I can make any gear improvements or what not.

Thanks!

As far as shadow goes, our sticky is really good.

For healing, once you have some gear and are relatively confident in your abilities, be sure your raid frames are up to the task. Awareness is the key to success. In several threads we talk about Vuhdo, Healbot, Grid, and Pitbull. All can perform well if properly configured. What's your setup?

Another quirky addon I really like is GTFO, since dead priests don't heal.

I use shadowpriest.com for a ton of info on my spriest. You can even make your own thread with your logs and get personalized help from the awesome people on there. My dps is still sucking because I honestly...don't like dpsing much on my priest, but the raid I'm in has plenty of healers, so they make me dps. I think a trinket would probably help me. :)

Uhhmm, what's up with your necklace? lol Anyway, you should replace your pvp pieces, not gem for crit, and there are a lot of upgrades you can get. I'd take a look at pre-raid gear over on shadowpriest.com and see what you can upgrade easily. You need to get your hit up, and then sp > haste > crit, with spirit when you can get it.

Spell rotation would be to keep VT, DP and sw:p up as much as possible (as close as you can get to 90% of the time for VT and DP, more for sw:p), making sure that if you use sw:p at first, you refresh it when you have 5 stacks of shadow weaving (I tend to throw it up if it's a run-in fight, since it's instant, then refresh when I get 5 stacks, but if I'm standing still from the beginning, I'll wait till my stacks are up, then cast sw:p). Then just mind blast when it's off cooldown, and mindflay the rest of the time. Later on when your gear is better, you can skip mind blast, as long as the raid has another source of replenishment. Only use sw:d when you have to move. I use power auras to tell me when VT and DP fall off, but it's not the best mod to use. One of those bar thingies is better, like DoTimer. I just hate to watch bars and timers, so I deal with less dps (though you do get a "feel" for when things are going to fall off after a while). Anyway, that's sort of it in a nutshell. :)

As for holy, there are at least two camps: renew spam and flash heal spam. I'm very brand new at it, so I'm not sure where I stand, and use both, for the proc and for the gear bonus, depending on what's going on in the raid, but it's easier to gear for shadow/holy than shadow/disc, since holy favors haste like shadow does, instead of crit, like disc does.~
