First off, kudos to Blizzard for the new LFG system, before this system I was in a very small social guild and very very seldom did any instances. (Did my first Slave Pens run last night despite the fact that I have 3 80s).

Second, and to the point of my post:

I've got dual spec level 65 with Dem and Dest. I started out with Dem and added the Dest later. My question is this. When I go into an instance and we fight my entire rotation consists of Petattack, Lifetap and spam the hell out of Rain of Fire. I have tried about 5 different rotations that include dropping curses and DOTs O'plenty, however I get an average of 400 more dps doing nothing but Pet-Lifetap-Rain of Fire. I refuse to link my armory because I cry when people point at my toon and laugh. I understand that the large numbers are due to the fact that it's a brutal as hell AOE hitting everything in range and thus the combined numbers add up, but bottom line is, when I use that rotation, stuff dies FAST. What I want to know is whether there is a way to do higher dps with a different rotation or spec. I feel like I am playing my Pally again with the complete lack of variety of attack.

Well in my experience, when it comes to packs of mobs, all you do is AoE these days, overall your damage per second will be higher if you're hitting 4+ mobs for a certain amount than if you're hitting one mob twice as hard. Sure your numbers may seem higher if you're doing single target dps, but when it comes down to it you're hitting more enemies dealing out a higher amount of damage.

You'll notice this even up into heroics, and hell even some raid trash. I don't raid on my warlock often at all, but i find the only real times i'm single targetting is on pulls that have CC, or bosses, otherwise it's just rain of fire or seed of corruption spam. At least that's how you top out the numbers for damage done/damage per second.

It's kind of a stupid system when you think of it, because your over all damage could be really really high, but the meters count all damage done during a fight, not just a single target, so it's as if your rain of fire, hitting 4 mobs, is hitting one mob for 4x the damage.

Anyway i think i'm kinda rambling now, long story short it really is that simple, your rotations will shine during single target, but during packs of trash, it's an AoE's game these days.

When you hit 70 and get seed of corruption your aoe gets alot better. Then you can plant 2-3 seeds and hellfire :)

With my lvl 73 Destro lock I just do Shadowfury + Rain of Fire. Always top in damage done and dps. Sadly it's this easy.

Destruction can push out some mean AOE with Rain of Fire, thanks to Empowered Imp. Your Imp does a critical hit and your next spell is a guaranteed crit. A tick of Rain of Fire counts as one spell, so if your Imp crits, you get a guaranteed Rain of Fire crit tick.

Which is just mean as hell with Ruin and lots of mobs.

What's odd is that Fingers of Frost (Mage talent) which essentially does the same thing, doesn't affect an entire Blizzard tick, only some of it. Either a bug or intentional, but watching Rain of Fire crit on 5+ mobs is sweet.

Yes it really is that easy. Trash =AoE. Done.

I just keep the lifetap buff up and RoF my way through everything but bosses normally unless it's a small pull or something needs targeting.

CoE, Immo, CB, Conflag, Incin spam (can usually sneak in a 2nd conflag before Immo needs refreshed), rinse repeat.

When in affliction spec I just spam Seed around for similar results (if aggro is not a problem - Seed seems to cause HUGE aggro.)

yep. melee classes might have a couple of different abilities to use... but for casters trash pulls = aoe = 1 spell only per spec... tis that simple. though the rotations do get more complex on bosses.. but in terms of trash everything is aoe'd now. blizzard though is hoping to change this with the release of cataclysm ^^
